MARY NEWTON Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 20, 2024.
Mary Ann Casey Newton went to be with the Lord on February 16, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. Mary was born to Dr. Franklin and Linda Casey on February 10, 1965 in Atlanta, Georgia, where her father was a medical resident. It brings us great comfort to know that Mary was received in Heaven by her beloved mother and other dear family members.

Mary was raised by her parents to love family, God, all creatures great and small, to have a servant's heart, to live after The Golden Rule, and to honor the value of hard work and education. Mary instilled these values into her three children - Hattie, Rosser, Jr., and Laughlin - as well.

Mary graduated from The Greenhill School in 1983. While at Greenhill you could find Mary with her friends, riding her horses at Willow Bend, or driving her yellow Corvette Stingray (with the personalized Mary KC license plates!). Mary went on to Southern Methodist University, pledged the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, and graduated with degrees in mathematics and art history. Mary's life-long friends from Greenhill and SMU were so supportive of Mary throughout her life, during her cancer diagnosis, and in her final days.

Mary had a gift for mathematics and enjoyed tutoring students during and after college - having achieved a perfect score on the Math Section of her SAT Exam. In 1989, Mary and her sisters were Idlewild debutantes together, a tradition carried on by her daughter Hattie.

Mary graduated from the University of Texas School of Law in 1991. She had a gift for criminal law defense work, treated all of her clients with respect and dignity, and is credited for helping many clients turn their lives around after working with her. Most recently Mary had worked in the oil and gas field and enjoyed the problem solving, mathematics, and engineering involved in the business. Mary was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed studying religion. Mary loved and fondly recalled all of the animals that she had throughout her life. Her beloved poodles, Captain and Frodo, brought Mary immense comfort throughout her cancer treatments.

Mary married the father of her children, Rosser Newton, Sr., in August 1992 and together they had three beloved children. The legacy of Mary's life will live on through her children.

Mary was pre-deceased by her mother, Linda Ann Drain Casey; grandparents Maude and George Drain and Pauline and William S. Casey; and uncles Dennis Casey and John Childs. Mary is survived by her father, Dr. Franklin Casey; children Hattie, Rosser, Jr., and Laughlin; sisters Dr. Donna Casey (Dr. Gary Weinstein), Dr. Lisa Casey (Dr. Brad Raper), and Cindy Casey Brown (Edgar Brown); aunts Brenda Casey, Carolyn Barry (O'Keefe Barry), and Roselyn Casey Childs; nieces and nephews Beatrice Mitchell (Cassie Roberts), Dr. Kyle Weinstein (Corrin Osborn), Bella Raper, Franklin Brown, and George Brown.

The family wishes to thank Mary's oncologist, Dr. Cynthia Osborne, for her exceptional care and devotion throughout Mary's cancer treatment. Thank you to caregivers who are like family and provided amazing care to Mary throughout her illness: Peggy Miller, Christine Chesire, Toni Dennis, Bessie Richmond, and Icy Verser, many of whom also cared for Mary's mom in the final year of her life. We all have sincere love and appreciation for Aunt Brenda Casey whose countless hours of time, knowledge of cancer, and unrivaled bedside manner made Mary feel so supported from diagnosis until her final days. The family also wishes to thank the staff at the T. Boone Pickens Center Faith Presbyterian Hospice for the care and kindness they showed to Mary and our family in her final days - even allowing us to bring up Mary's poodles for visitation.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. CT on Wednesday, February 21st at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church, at 9200 Inwood Road, Dallas, Texas, 75220. A reception will immediately follow the service, with a live stream available as well.

In lieu of flowers the family is grateful for donations honoring Mary to the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Research Foundation ("BCRF") or other breast cancer group, T. Boone Pickens Hospice Center, the SPCA, or the charity of your choice.

Our boys were classmates at St. Mark´s and my heart goes out to the entire family. Mary was a kind and gentle soul.

I unfortunately never got to meet Mary in person. I knew her through my son and her son Laughlin´s friendship. Mary welcomed my son to her to house and treated him with such kindness. I enjoyed texting back and forth with her several occasions and kept her in my prayers. I was so saddened to hear she passed and we would never meet this side of heaven. May she rest fully healed with the Lord. My son talked so highly of her and Laughlin´s love for her was so evident. May God´s peace surround her entire family.

I so enjoyed having Mary as a customer. She was always so affable and easy to deal with. I will miss helping her with her financial affairs and will miss interacting with her personally. My prayers go out to her family. RIP Mary.

My husband and I met Mary through oil field business partnership. She was a customer of my husband´s chemical business, and we met on several occasions. The last time I saw Mary was at her home in Dallas on our way back to Midland from visiting family in Louisiana. We stopped by, she and my husband discussed a bit of business while I waited in the car, and she came out to greet and congratulate me on the pregnancy of our first child. She never got to meet our now 7 month old son, but my husband was able to see her one more time a few months ago.

Our condolences to the family. May Adonai bless and keep each of you and provide the comfort only He can at this time.

Heartbroken to hear the news. There are so many wonderful things I could say to to praise my friend genuinely one of the best persons I´ve even know...
The word I most associate with Mary, is resilient. Like that one green weed in the garden she dealt with whatever life brought her and was there in the morning..
I sure am going to miss her. RIP my friend..

Sending my sincere condolences to Mary´s children and whole family at this time of loss. While I never met Mary, I know her amazing daughter Hattie, who is a wonderful and kind soul. I know Mary´s light lives on in her...no greater gift to others than the wonderful children one leaves behind. Rest in Peace. May her memory bring her family comfort at this sad time. Michele Dantas

I first got to know Marry as a mom friend. Her youngest son Laughlin and my son became great friends when Laughlin attended Trinity in Mindland. Marry was a great mom who loved her children dearly. Marry just started her cancer battle when I first met her. She was a strong, positive, loving, kind and generous person. We were very grateful for her driving Laughlin to see my son when he had a swim meet in Prosper. She just got out of the hospital from a lung infection two days before. We sat in her car catching up on our kids, her cancer treatment, my new job, her oil business for about 20 minutes. That was the last time I saw her, and I´m so glad that I sat in her car and spent some time with her. Despite the setback on her treatment, her spirits were high, and she was strong and hopeful. I´ll always remember our time together and her favorite phrase: That´s fantastic!

I am Brenda Casey, Mary´s aunt. I had the honor and privilege over the last few months to take Mary to her Dr appointments and chemotherapy treatments. I wanted to get to know my niece better. Mary and I shared memories of loved ones gone before us, updates on our children and my grandchildren, world events and our love of God.
I was in awe of how Mary handled this illness with dignity and pride, never questioning the "why", like most do.
We talked of her love of her three children,
each different in their own ways but equally loved. She shared her deep love for her sisters; Donna, Lisa and Cindy and her lifelong respect and love for her "papa, Franklin.
Mary loved her extended family, each and every one of us and had great expectations for all her nieces and nephews.
I will forever be grateful for the time I had with her and feel blessed.
