Mary Shields Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2024.
Mary Louise Shields (née Bruneau), born on June 11, 1931, in Cloquet, MN, passed away at the age of 93 on August 24, 2024, in St. Paul, Minnesota. A devoted mother and a revered member of the community, Mary's life was marked by her unwavering faith and dedication to her family.

Mary spent her professional life as a school bus driver for I.S.D. 197, where she was known for her bravery and joy in transporting children, who loved her in return. Her commitment to her Catholic faith was evident as a long-time member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church. Mary cherished her time spent in her yard, tending to her flowers, which was only surpassed by the love she had for her family gatherings.

She leaves behind her daughter's Marirose Shields and, Barbara Ramsey, and served as a stand-in parent for Marirose's daughter Celina Roberson. Mary was also a beloved figure to many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Shields.

A private memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 19th, followed by burial at St. Peter's Cemetery in Mendota Heights on Friday. Mary's legacy of love and courage will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

I was a special-needs school bus driver with Mary Lou for I.S.D. 197 and worked with her for many years. She was a solid, no-nonsense lady who loved her family, her students and her Faith. I am a member of St. Matthew's and would see her there at Saturday Mass and occasionally walk out with her to catch her ride home. We had fun together at work too. I will miss seeing her. God bless her. She has certainly earned her place in Heaven.

Marirose, I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. One thing I know for certain, after all the years I´ve known you, is that you have always greatly honored both your mom and dad. Despite the many challenges and difficulties you've faced, you've remained steadfast in your commitments to them. You have loved them well, and they will always know that.

Mom I already miss you very much. You were such a special person to me and always will be. I'll always love you Mom! Thank you for being in my life. You were the best mother-in-law I could've ever asked for!

Mom had such a sense of humor telling her grandkids if they sing you are my sunshine to a gopher hole they would come out for them!
And if you asked her how she slept she would respond "with my closed"
Many fond and funny memories!
