She served first as president of Los Angeles City College, the flagship institution of the Los Angeles Community College District, and then as chancellor of Oakland Community College, the largest community college in Michigan. In 2007 she was named as Chancellor of Houston Community College System in Houston, TX.
Dr. Spangler has served as a classroom educator, an administrator, an executive as well as a national advocate for higher education over her career, earning honors and accolades every step of the way. It was my good fortune and true joy to report directly to Mary Spangler at Los Angeles City College when she was the college President and I was the Director of Staff and Organizational Development. Then and now I have been in awe of Mary as a visionary leader, indebted to her as a committed mentor, and privileged to call her my friend.

Mary's focus, dedication, and commitment to continuously working at the highest level of excellence as a community college educator has been an inspiration for me and countless others. Mary brought grace, beauty, and a joie de vivre to all of her endeavors.

My condolences are extended to Mary's family, friends, and colleagues. I join you in deeply missing a "woman of heart" who will live on in our hearts and lives.
