Mary M. Starr (nee Matenaer) age 85 of West Bend, died peacefully at her residence Tuesday, March 2, 2021, surrounded by her loving family and was lifted to heaven on the wings of angels. She was born in West Bend to Gregory and Florence (nee Ekzell) Matenaer.
She was united in marriage to Donald J. Starr August 24, 1957 at St. Mary's Church in Barton. They shared 40 incredible years before Donald's passing November 25, 1997.
Mary was a music teacher for nearly 30 years with many of those years at Silverbrook School in West Bend. While there she also directed musicals, plays and other performing arts. Later in life she worked in the jewelry department at Kohl’s.
Mary was very active throughout her life. She was a member of the West Bend Woman’s Club, the Wisconsin Retired Educators and the Red Hat Ladies. She was also very active and volunteered at St. Mary’s Church, where she enjoyed going on mission trips including a trip to Honduras. She also enjoyed volunteering at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Cedar Community.
She loved seeing and experiencing the world. Mary was a fearless world traveler and went on trips that others thought were dangerous. She never stopped learning and was a voracious reader.
Mary is survived by her 4 children: Deborah (Daniel) Slottke of Bradenton, FL, Peter (Teri) Starr of Kewaskum, Gregory (Virginia) Starr of West Bend and Jennifer (Mark) Muckerheide of West Bend, 7 grandchildren: Megan, Travis, April, Ryan, Eric, Jedediah and Jake and 4 great-grandchildren Brantley, Brynlee, Lexi and Elaina, and another little one on the way. She is further survived by her siblings Nancie Wedemayer of West Bend and Steven (Tegwin) Matenaer of Idaho and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents Gregory and Florence Matenaer, her beloved husband Donald Starr, her sister Joan Matenaer and her sister-in-law Lois Weinberger.
A celebration of Mary’s life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Unity Club are appreciated. Please send memorials to: Mary Starr Family c/o Schmidt Funeral Home, 629 Cedar Street, West Bend, WI 53095.
Mary's family would also like to extend their sincerest gratitude and thanks to the staff of Preceptor Home Health Hospice for the extraordinary care and compassion they showed to Mary and the family.
Mary had a real zest for life. She put into practice the phrase "You only live once." There is a favorite saying she shared with us: Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and proclaiming, "Wow, what a ride!!!" Now, get out there and live your best life in loving memory of her.
The Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend is serving the family. If you wish to leave a message of comfort and condolence in an online guestbook please visit www.schmidtfuneralhome.com

My friendship with Mary began at St. Mary's Church and continued at Silverbrook Middle School when I did my intern teaching under her tutorial in 1976. She was such an excellent role model for me: classroom management, musical leadership and enthusiasm for life in general. In later years, when presented with a classroom situation of my own, I'd often think "What would Mary do?" My condolences to her entire family; I am so sorry for your loss.

I was lucky to have Mrs. Starr as my music teacher in 6th grade in the 1979/1980 school year. She always had a minute to share, loved the Snoopy drawings I did for her and when I was terrible at reading music she let me do extra credit. She had a way of making you feel good about who you were and not what you could do. Her energy and love for music was a true gift but her way of listening was a true blessing as a troubled child. She will be missed. I wish I found her before she passed to thank her for the difference she made in my life.

Mrs. Starr was my middle school music teacher and choir director from 1988-19991. I loved how her love of music was contagious. She was also a really good listener during a rough time in my childhood. She was a great teacher and a great woman.

Mrs. Mary Starr was a wonderful music teacher. I'm a former pupil of hers from Silverbrook School! I attended there from 84' to 87' and she left quite the impression on me and the musical talent I possessed! She was partially responsible for me beginning to take lessons and learn to play the piano. I learned from another local private instructor but Mrs. Starr helped lead me onto that path! I'm forever grateful to her for that!
I haven't played now in many years but, the enjoyment it brought me I won't ever forget!
I should have persued vocal lessons as well as I have always been able to sing too and be close to being spot on doing so. I remember our couple class musical performances from back then and she complimented my vocals frequently!
I'm nearing middle age and the last time I remember seeing and speaking to her in public I was in my early to mid 20's. She was a sweet soul and I'm truly sorry for your families loss!

Mary was quite the lady; fun-loving, kind, curious, and full of life. I will miss the way her eyes sparkled when hearing a great story or joke. I will miss hearing about her days at Lawrence and her most recent trips. I will miss her zest for life! I was blessed to have known her. Hugs to her family!

So sorry to read of the loss of Mary. She was a light of our WB Music Dept Staff. I was a new music teacher to WB....she took me under her wing where I learned much through her example. She was absolutely full of spunk and fun. Her students were a reflection of that love of music and theatre. We were all fortunate to have known her in our lives. Condolences to her family.
