Matthew Clemson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 19 to Jan. 26, 2023.
Matthew Alexander Clemson, 17, died on January 15 in Exeter, NH, by suicide. Matthew was born September 21, 2005 in Evanston, IL where he grew up and lived when not away at school. During his childhood in Evanston he attended Chiaravalle Montessori School, Dewey Elementary School, and Nichols Middle School. He was a junior at Phillips Exeter Academy at the time of his death.

Matthew is survived by his parents, Peter and Stephanie (Allin) Clemson and his sister, Anna (all of Evanston, IL), his maternal grandmother Mary Ann Allin (Washington, DC), aunts and uncles Lyndon Allin (Washington, DC), Conrad (Christine) Clemson (Boston, MA), and Michael (Christine) Clemson (Leesburg, VA), as well as his cousins and extended family. He was predeceased by his beloved dog, Moose.

A celebration of Matthew's life will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at 3 pm at First United Methodist Church, 516 Church Street, Evanston, IL.

A life-long skier and skilled rock-climber, Matthew loved the exhilaration of a powder day on the steep slopes of Big Sky, Montana, and he loved the deliberative and collaborative process of solving a challenging problem on the climbing wall. He also enjoyed hiking in Big Sky in the summer and the freedom of charging up the trail with his sister, friends, and dog (and leaving his parents in the dust).

Matthew also had a passion for baseball. He loved playing baseball, first for Evanston Baseball & Softball Association house teams, then with his wonderful teammates on the Evanston OrangeCats travel team, and finally on Exeter's JV baseball team. Matthew combined his love for baseball and math as the commissioner of a long-running fantasy baseball league that required participants to read a voluminous rules package and participate in drafts for major and minor league players. Matthew was a devoted Cubs fan who was fortunate to experience the 2016 World Series Championship season from Cubs Convention in January to the victory parade in November. He loved his first summer job last year at Wrigley Field as a member of the Premier Guest Services team.

Matthew had a fierce intellect and in high school developed a passion for writing. Last summer he started playing guitar, which he loved. His favorite class in high school was Epistemology. At Exeter, he participated in Model United Nations, was co-head of the Philosophy Club, a member of the Climbing Club and the Robotics Team, a peer tutor for physics, served as a campus tour guide, and was a proud resident of Wentworth Hall. He was looking forward to studying philosophy in college.

Dear Stephanie, Peter and Anna,

We mourn the loss of your beautiful
child, Matthew alongside you. Please accept our condolences. As parents of a classmate, we hope time will help you grieve, find solace and heal. While Ojas and I did not have the pleasure and honor of knowing Matthew, Aavik did while sharing the same dorm, attending the same clubs or classes. Here are a few words from him for Matthew.

Matthew (or Clem, as I and most knew him) was an incredible person. I lived in Wentworth with him, and although we didn´t have a chance to interact too much on separate floors, I got to know him through his passion for Philosophy. He and I coheaded the Philosophy Club, and his passion shone through every meeting. It wouldn´t matter how fast, how heated, how dramatic discussions got - when Clem talked, the world slowed to listen. He was thoughtful, at once both analytical and intuitive. He could feel how discussions shaped and evolved, pointing them subtly in certain directions, leading people to really understand what they needed to. He was one of the few people I knew that was genuinely interested in Philosophy and Religion, and wouldn´t stop praising that one Epistemology class (we took the class at the same time, while we weren´t in the same class).
Clem was an intelligent, thoughtful and reflective person, and I´m grateful for the time I knew him, for the discussions I could have with him, and for his wisdom. Godspeed Clem.

We hold all of you closely in our hearts and thoughts as you find your way through this difficult time.

To the family of Mathew and to his classmates and friends. I am so sorry and without words. My son Ashton Szarnicki was a team mate of Mathew on the baseball team and Robotics. This has been heart breaking for us all. I pray for peace, understanding and the strength to endure such a loss. While life and it rendering can be cruel and harsh, I trust that we all can align with some more uplifting experiences and outcomes. Please except my deepest and warmest condolences.

Matthew Clemson will always be frozen in his kids choir days for me. I see his face every morning in the signed photo of my FUMC Evanston choir that hangs by the bathroom sink. Matthew was a gentle, reflective boy. He had a lovely soprano voice and he liked to watch chancel choir rehearsals and conduct along. I remembered him being so thoughtful and wise for such a young person. He played Moses in our little church musical and he so perfectly fit the role of soft-spoken, humble, and compassionate leader. Stephanie and Peter, you raised such a beautiful young man with a heart of gold. I can´t find any of the right words for this moment - maybe there aren´t any. But I am so so grateful to have known Matthew, to have made music with him, laughed and played together. He was so loved.

I am a parent of Noah `23. I did not have the honor of knowing Matthew, but can feel your pain. My father committed suicide in 1978, and every day I can still feel his presence in my heart and mind. He was a brilliant, compassionate physician who got his Jewish family out of Egypt. Yet he suffered silently. I am still riddled with guilt at not being able to see what was not evident to a 19 year old, graduating from college on the day it happened, happy to be starting medical school, and not by his side.

Please know that I am thinking of all of all of you. And to the community as a whole, seek help early if this ever crosses your mind, however briefly. Please.

My deepest condolences to the Clemson family on the loss of Matthew. He was a brilliant and inquisitive young man with an insatiable desire for meaning and truth. My daughter, Enya, had the privilege of working with Matthew on a 3-person mechanical team of robotics and participating in the philosophy club that he co-led weekly. He led discussions on the question of what it means to be human on that night, courageously tackling the fundamental questions of life, society, and reality.

Matthew was a courageous soul who lived his life with passion and drive. His brief life forever serves as an inspiration for all of us to live our lives fully and with passion and love for all.

May he rest in peace, in love and in eternity.

It is hard to express how sad I am for Matthew's sister, mom and dad. As a fellow parent of an "upper" at Exeter, I am so very sorry for your loss. He was a beautiful boy, full of life and curiosity. You will always love him and he will always love you right back. Now he is in a place where there is no pain or grief. May God hold you all in the palm of His hand. God bless you all.

I was Matt´s supervisor for the Cubs. He worked the front door of the 1914 club and was extremely proactive at his job. He had a great personality and would consistently help me with small tasks like collecting scanners and wristbands. He was a great kid all around.

I had the amazing pleasure of working with Matthew as a climbing coach on the Evanston Athletic Club's climbing team from 2017 - 2019. Matthew was an amazing team player, encouragjng his teammates and challenging them to grow in climbing and in sportsmanship. His dedication to what he loved was always admirable even if it was 10 different things at a time.

Peter, Stephanie and Anna, you are in my thoughts and my prayers. Matthew was an amazing kid, your love and support for him to succeed and grow was palpable. Blessings to you.
