Matthew Cook Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 8 to Apr. 9, 2010.
COOK, Matthew Jay November 10, 1987 - April 4, 2010 "I'm on the pursuit of happiness..." Matthew Cook passed on April 4, 2010 peacefully, in his own home, with the hands of his mother Lynn, father Don, sister Marina and brother Brady supporting him. Matt inspired all of us by his relentless determination, intellect, humor, wit, joie de vivre, integrity and spirit. Born in Edmonton on November 10, 1987, Matt graduated from St. Francis Xavier High School and went on to play hockey for the Bonnyville Pontiacs until he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2006. Throughout his journey he overcame many challenges and demonstrated his character when he achieved his goal to play for Team Canada National Sledge Hockey team in 2008. It was Matt's privilege to serve his community through his support of the Canadian Cancer Society, Amputee Coalition of Canada, The Northern Alberta Amputee Program, Paralympic Sports Association, Soldier On, and more. Matthew's life was shared by his grandfather Don Cook and his wife Wendy, and grandparents Dora and Eugene Anderson; his aunts and uncles Dale and Tracy Cook, Dean Cook, Donna and Randy Oberik, Darrell and Kim Cook, Corinne and Charles Hyman, and Glenna and Keith Thompson; and cousins Corinna, Heaven, Jackson, Madison, Kaitlyn and Cody. He was predeceased by his grandmother Patricia Cook. Matthew's life was blessed with many wonderful friends, teammates, and countless special people who shared his vision and goals through their love, energy, support and care. A celebration of Matthew's remarkable life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at McDougall United Church, 10025 - 101 Street in Edmonton. Reverend Dr. John Henry Weinlick will officiate. Wheelchair access is at the south entrance. Cremation has taken place. Should you wish, donations to support the fight against rare cancers may be made to the Matt Cook Foundation, 11835-102 Avenue, Edmonton, AB, T5K 0R6.

Don, Lynn. Brady and Marina,my thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you remember Matt. He was a generous and kind young man and his smile could light up a room. Even in the early days at the Glenrose, he had a "lets get on with life" kind of attitude, focusing on possibilities rather than losses. I feel blessed that I was part of his life for that short time. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

Don,Lynn,Brady & Marina, our families thoughts & prayers have been with you. I wanted to tell you Matt wrote me, "Mya has been a huge inspiration for me...I seemed to find much more strength within myself to keep fighting". "oddly enough I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to learn life lessons that sme people may never. If it is my time to go I just hope I've inspired as many people as Mya did,..If I have then I have lived a fulfilling life!" As a parent it seems so unfair, just know that you raised an AMAZING son....who did what he said...he truly inspired others above and beyond, I think even his expectations.

To the Cook Family,

Although I have not been around Edmonton for the past few years I am truly saddened for the loss that you have faced. Matty was one of the most passionate individuals that I have ever met. He was not only one of the best teammates that I was lucky enough to have but was one of the most honest and sincere individuals that I have ever known. Although I cannot be there to celebrate his life, your family and Matty will always be in my thoughts. He was a truly special person and I will forever remember the time that I had to spend with him.

Don & Family,
I read once that, "It is in the valleys, that we grow." Matt had many valleys and would climb out from those valleys to the top of the hill. At ever challenge he would inspire. Don, I realize that you are in a valley but like you and your family taught Matt, you will come out of this, Matt is still with you. God bless and peace be with you.

Dear Cook Family,
I am so, so sorry to hear of the passing of Matt. I had the privilege of teaching all 3 of your children at Greenview. I remember them all so fondly and was sad when you moved to another school. I saw Matt a few times on tv throughout the years and was so amazed and impressed with his positive outlook and strength of character. I know all of you were a huge part of how he faced this challenge that life threw at him. His legacy will live on and on in all of you. My heart breaks for you at this time and I have you in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you for allowing me to know all of you for a season.
God Bless,

April 9, 2010 Don, Lynn and family...words can not express our sorrow for your lose. Words or course do not come easy but we wanted to let you know our thoughts are with you. I hear about the days Don and Dennis played hockey and i can see that this love came out in Matt as well. Dennis told me stories about Don playing net and eating chocolate bars as the play was always at the other end....any truth to that..?! You must be exceptionally proud of Matt and all that he accomplished in his life. From what I have heard about him, he was a very brave man and his memory will live on.

Whether it was doing a write-up for our magazine, or phoning to tell me how his training was going, Matt was always upbeat and determined to reach his goal. That attitude was such a good example to our other younger members. Matt is gone, but will not be forgotten.

My deepest sympathy goes out to your family. I wasn't able to have the privaledge of meeting your dear Matt, but he was an big inspiration to me. I too was diagnosed with osteosacroma while in grade 12 at F.X. in Edmonton in 1997 and I didn't ever think I would play a sport again. I came across his name on the Young Adult Cancer Canada website and found out about sledge hockey and the PSA. He gave me the direction and courage to go out and reclaim the sports aspect of my life. Your son was a inspiration in so many lives, and I am so grateful he touched mine. My thoughts and prayers are with you family during this difficult time.

Don, Lynn, Brady & Marina;

I was so saddened & surprised to hear the news of Mattie. I had hoped to read news about him regarding his accomplishments at this year's Para-Olympic games. Instead I have read about his strength, courage and determination to take any challenge that came his way and conquer it. It was those characther traits that Mattie posessed which made me remember the time long ago, when I babysat both he & Brady. He was never going to let the fact that he was smaller & younger than Brady stop him from getting up those stairs sooner or get to that toy faster than his older brother.
I hope to instill that determination and never give up attitude into my children. Those are great characteristics to have & I will try to do it a bit every day myself, which will help to keep Mattie's spirit alive.
Don & Lynn, you have raised truly remarkable children. Thank you for letting me be a part of your life so long ago & to see what wonderful parenting can do. He will be missed.

My sincerest condolences,
Leanne Chomitsh-Stevenson

Matt was a blessing - I am both honored and fortunate to have had the opportunity to get to know him. May your family find the strength to get through this together, knowing that Matt will always be with you. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Hopefully this poem offers you the same comfort I found in it.

A Note From Heaven - Anonymous

If I could write from Heaven,
This is what I’d say,
Please don’t miss me too much,
I’m with you throughout your day.
You may not see or hear me,
But if you’re quiet and still,
You may just feel my presence;
Because, in Heaven, there is free will.
Don’t worry for the day,
It will come and go as planned,
Enjoy each moment you are given,
Keep worry from your hand.
Keep sorrow to a minimum;
For if Heaven you could see,
You’d know I’m safe and happy,
I did not cease to be.
Moments in time are brief,
Until we’ll be together again,
As Eternity lasts forever,
Our lives, they have no end.
