I have only just learned of Matthew's death, having perused the internet to find his whereabouts and perhaps meet up this summer in the U.K. I am shocked and saddened beyond words. We worked together with Halo Trust in Kabul through 1991, where we had many unforgettable adventures working with the landmine clearance teams, hiking through the mountains, avoiding skirmishes between rival muj groups and swimming/half drowning floating down river rapids near Pol e Khumri. We stayed close friends until 2000, when we both married and our lives diverged. I am glad to see he had three undoubtedly brilliant and beautiful children, with which to remember him by. I am so sorry for your family's untimely loss. He lived more in his 50 years than those who lived far longer.

The Steering Committee 2012-13 of Christ's College Boat Club were saddened to hear of the untimely death of the Boat Club Captain 1982-3, whio presided over a sound and steady improvement in the position of Christ's 1st VIII in the may Bumps of that year. Matthew also won an oar in the 2nd Lents VIII of 1981 which was our first view of his undoubted potential.

It was only recently that I learnt that Matthew had passed away. My sincere condolences to his wife and family.
Matthew and I rowed together as novices in our first term at Christ's and again in our last year (1982/3) when Matthew was Captain of Boats and I was Vice Captain. He was an inspirational leader who put huge energy into developing the club. Early in the year, one journalist described us as 'by far the quickest boat on the river', thanks to a punishing training regime and long bleak Sundays spent rowing at Ely!
Matthew was also pivotal in raising funds to purchase a beautiful new, cold-moulded, wooden eight in the spring of 1983 which was named Earl Mountbatten by his widow, Lady Mountbatten. In June we qualified to row at Henley and some of my happiest memories of Cambridge are of summer days spent rowing on the Thames in the morning and evening and then relaxing as a crew in the Romanes' garden or on a (brief!) visit to the pub.
Thank you Matthew for making all of that possible.

I was so sad to hear of the recent news regarding Matthew. I worked with him in Northern Ireland 1988 - 1990 as his LO and had the utmost respect for his professionalism, leadership and guidance. My sincerest condolences to his wife and children for their loss.
