Maud Muller Gillespie

CARROLLTON - Maud Muller Gillespie of Carrollton, Va., died Wednesday, July 21, 2004. Mrs. Gillespie was born in Albany, N.Y., on Nov. 30, 1911, and lived many years in Chincoteague, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Earl Gillespie of Atlantic, Va. Mrs. Gillespie retired in 1981 from a career at NASA on Wallops Island and began her career as a faithful volunteer for her community. Until the day of her passing, she volunteered extensively at the Carrollton Library, the Jacques Cousteau Society and the Isle of Wight County Department of Social Services. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Chincoteague, as well as an associate member of Benn's United Methodist Church, Smithfield. Mrs. Gillespie was active for many years in the choirs of both churches. Mrs. Gillespie is survived by three daughters, Roberta Doty of Whiting, N.J., Ruth Tolbert of Chincoteague and Sally Highlander of Baltimore, Md.; three sons, Richard Gillespie and William T. Gillespie, both of Chincoteague, and Ernest R. Gillespie of Carrollton; and three sisters, Ruth Soule, Mary Watson and Margaret Grant. She was preceded in death by three sons, Raymond L. Gillespie, Earl Gillespie and an infant. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Arly Muller, Dana Muller and Wesley Muller. She also leaves behind to cherish her memory 22 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock on Sunday, July 25, at Christ United Methodist Church in Chincoteague with the Rev. Travis Deloach officiating. Interment will follow in the John W. Taylor Memorial Cemetery in Temperanceville, Va. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27, at Benn's United Methodist Church in Smithfield, Va., with the Rev. Mark Burgess officiating.
