Maurice Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 7, 2003.
Maurice C Smith, 73, of Pleasant Grove, was called home, suddenly, on December 2, 2003, due to heart failure. He was born June 5, 1930, in Provo, Utah, the loving son of Clarence Alvin and Orpha May Walker Smith. He married Anna Louise Dupree Dunn on February 8, 1951. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Hawaii Temple.

Maurice grew up in Provo. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served in the Pacific at the end of WWII. He re-enlisted in the U. S. Army, and served for over 30 years, completing his career as a highly decorated Command Sgt. Major. During that time, he served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He retired in 1976, and moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah.

Maurice was an active member of the LDS Church, having served in many positions during his life. He was currently serving a Service Mission at the LDS Employment Resource Center in American Fork.

He enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting with his friends. His life was dedicated to serving his family, church, country, friends, and neighbors.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Anna, of Pleasant Grove; three daughters and a son: Janie (Jim) Prentice, Haleiwa, HI; Glenna (Bob) Schartmann, Draper, UT; Jeffery (Kathleen) Smith, Provo, UT; Gayle (Paul) Olpin, Pleasant Grove, UT; daughter-in-law, Cathy Jo Smith, Sturgis, KY; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include, brothers: Richard (Betty) Smith, Olympia, WA; and Lynn (Ann) Smith, Rexburg, ID; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Maurice Jr.; and daughter, Maurica Ann.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 8, 2003, at Noon, in the Battlecreek Eighth Ward Chapel, 1222 East Nathaniel Drive (approx. 600 South), Pleasant Grove. Dear Anna and family,

As I testified today in church, Maurice will be missed by so many who loved him and he gave service to. As I pondered during Sacrament I realized how just 2 wks. ago I was at the birth and ushering in of my 7th grandchild into this world. I then realized how I was able to be there to help usher Maurice to the other side, he doing what he enjoyed, being in the service of his fellowman. He was a wonderful friend, neighbor, and brother whom I'll miss greatly. Please know I am always a phone call away for you Anna.

Love,

Rayonna
