Max English Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 3, 2017.
Born October 24, 1919, in New Castle, Indiana, Dr. Max Robert English knew from a young age that he wanted to be a physician. His passion for helping people was reflected in his career path as well as his dedication to his family and friends throughout his 97 years. Determined to begin his medical career, Dr. English completed college in just three years at DePauw University and then attended medical school at the University of Louisville.

While in medical school, Dr. English was on a visit home when he ran into the daughter of a family friend. After only six weeks of dating, he proposed to this beautiful, vibrant woman, Dorothy (Dottie) Helen Wright and they were married the following day. Max and Dottie were happily married for almost 74 years and had four children, Max Robert Jr., Susan Lynn, S. Mark and Craig Alan.
Also during Dr. English's time in medical school, WWII was in full force and the soon-to-be young doctor felt led to join the U.S. Navy where he served as a medical officer on the USS Fallon and the USS Rogers Blood. He was also recalled during the Korean War.

After the war ended and Dr. English had completed his residency, he and Dottie took a leap of faith and moved their young family to Baltimore, Maryland in order for him to take over a family practice on Belair Road. He ran this general practice for 22 years, delivering more than 2,000 babies and caring for countless families, many whom still remember their beloved family doctor.

In 1968, Dr. English was approached to join a new group at St. Joseph's Hospital in Baltimore called Osler Drive Emergency Physicians (ODEPA). This was one of the first emergency groups formed in the United States staffed by experienced physicians. In 2013, St. Joseph's inducted Dr. English into the Inaugural Class of their "Healing Hands Guild," which celebrates outstanding physician care. He was also a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Emergency Physicians, Maryland State Medical Society and the Baltimore County Medical Association.

Prior to his career move to ODEPA, Dr. English moved his growing family from White Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland to Churchwardens Road in the Homeland neighborhood of Baltimore where he and Dottie lived for 30 years.
Outside of work, Dr. English enjoyed boating with Dottie and his four children. He started power boating in 1957 and was a member of the Baltimore Yacht Club from 1958-1962. Then in 1968, the same year he helped start ODEPA, he transitioned to sailing and became a member of the Annapolis Sailing Club. He was also a member of Baltimore Country Club for 58 years.

In 1988, Dr. English retired from medicine, although he always remained the first person his family and friends would call when medical advice was needed. He and Dottie enjoyed spending their winters in Sarasota, Florida from 1988 until 2010 where they soaked up the sunshine at the beach, played golf, biked, attended shows and entertained friends. At the same time they moved from their home in Homeland to The Meadows in Lutherville, Maryland. Most recently they resided at Blakehurst Senior Independent Living Community in Towson, Maryland.

Dr. English was a driven, hard-working, loving, and dedicated family man with a strong faith, fantastic sense of humor and beautiful spirit. His legacy will continue to live on through the babies he delivered, the emergency department he created and the family he built.

Dr. English was the loving husband of Dorothy Helen English; beloved father of Susan Lynn Bosley and her late husband Terrence, S. Mark English, Craig Alan English and his wife Brenda and the late Max Robert English, Jr.; cherished grandfather of Sheryl Ruth Reid, Meredith Susan Meixner, Amanda Brooke McCullough, Steven Mark English, Jr., Savannah Marcella English, Max Robert English, II, Lauren Ruth English, Craig Alan English, Jr., and Lindsay Anna Vigo; also survived by 10 great grandchildren.

Interment private; A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed in Dr. English's memory to St. Andrew's Christian Community, 5802 Roland Avenue, Baltimore Maryland 21210.

I will never forget Dr English and his office on the corner of Belair Rd and White Ave. My mother and I just spoke of him in November. Mom passed away in December.
May the English family find peace at this time and know how wonderful this man was.

Dr English was my Dr for many years and he delivered my son and daughter. He was a wonderful man. I think of him often and he had a long life. Deepest sympathy to his family. I remember that he took over Dr. Wilkerson's practice when he retired.

I was one of five children in my family who were delivered by Dr. English. I remember going to his office at BelAir Road and White Avenue as a young child. My mother, Dolores Bents, remembers him as a kind and caring man. His was a life well spent.

Dr. English was our family doctor for many years, delivering all 6 of us children from 1949 thru 1961. My parents, Helen and Earl Howell of Overlea, thought highly of him and appreciated all he did for our family. When my grandfather had a heart attack in 1950, Dr. English left his office to come to the house to treat him. I pray that as you grieve you will find peace in knowing he touched many lives.

Blessings, Diane (Howell) May

My deepest sympathy to the family of Dr Max English. He was our family doctor since we first moved to the Gardenville area. He delivered my children and treated one of them in the ER at St. Joes. He knew I liked the Orioles and one time he told me he was at the airport and saw Willie MIranda and his whole family, lots of children, he said. I also remembered I cried when he retired from private practice and went to St. Joes. Everyone loved him. There won't be another like him. May he rest in peace. Wonderful man.

Thanks to Margaret Greller, who, in an earlier condolence note, mentioned the location of Dr. English's office at Belair Road and White Avenue. This information virtually confirmed that he was "the" Dr. English who saved my life following an accident in my grandparents' Overlea home. It is likely that had he not intervened when he did, I would have, at minimum, lost my left arm, and potentially, my life, from a catastrophic loss of blood. I hope that the span of Dr. English's years with his family, friends, colleagues, and patients were happy and fulfilling, and sincerely pray that they can find some comfort knowing how lucky they were to have had him in their lives. Every day I know how fortunate I was.

My deepest sympathy to them on his passing.

I am so sorry for the family's loss. Psalms 90:10 says those who are especially strong live 80 years. May you remember Max's strength in life as he rests in God's memory. John 6:39
