Michael Lindgren Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 18, 2024.
Michael James Lindgren was born on September 3, 1957 in Yonkers, New York, the third of Thomas and Patricia Lindgren's four children. His lifelong love for his family, sports, music and the outdoors began during his childhood in Thornwood, New York. He attended Stepinac High School (class of 1975) and met the love of his life, Bernadette Lindgren, née Henderson, at a mixer his junior year. Michael played four years of varsity soccer, captaining the team at Providence College where graduated with his B.S. in Finance in 1979. He had a long and successful career in finance positions, retiring as the CFO of Beacon Press in 2017 following many years with Houghton Mifflin and ITT Sheraton among other positions. He married Bernadette at Our Lady of Good Counsel Chapel in White Plains, New York on May 16, 1981 and began their lives together in Dobbs Ferry with his basset hound Duke. They started raising their family in Saddle Brook, New Jersey before moving to Medfield, Massachusetts where he was a renowned youth soccer coach and highly valued neighbor for his ability to fix anything and willingness to lend a hand. In 2019, Michael and Bernadette retired to their summer home in Hampton Bays, New York where Mike lived his dream of immaculately maintaining his lawn and the Staller Manor garden, body surfing and rock collecting at Ponquogue Beach and East Landing, bike riding to 7-11 for Pepsi, and golfing every Thursday. Michael was not only a great person, but an incredibly supportive father and will forever be missed by his wife of 43 years and their children and their partners, Shannon Lindgren Murtha (Rico Murtha), Katherine Noel King (Michael King), and Erik Michael Lindgren (Charlesy Graham). His greatest joy later in life was his grandchildren, Henry Michael Murtha, Astrid Marion Murtha, Jennifer Shannon King, and Jasper Michael King, and Pops will always be remembered by his troublemakers. His loss is also felt by his brother Thomas Lindgren, sisters Patrice Riggin and Janet Murray, and their spouses, his many nieces and nephews, friends, neighbors, former colleagues, and the many people he helped and mentored throughout his too short of time here. Michael passed on Monday, July 15th, 2024 of cancer, having only been diagnosed weeks before. He was comforted by his Catholic faith and services will be held in late August; due to Michael's sudden illness and passing arrangements are still being made. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to honor Mike's memory donate to the Friars Forever Athletic Fund or the Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne, NY. For those able, Michael was a consistently frequent blood donor and we encourage donations in his memory as well.
A memorial mass for Michael James Lindgren will be held on Thursday, August 29th at 10am at Our Lady of Good Counsel Chapel (Sisters of the Divine Compassion) located at 52 N Broadway White Plains, New York 10603 with a repast to follow at the Mansion on Broadway located at 139 N Broadway.

So sorry Bernadette. I just saw Michael's name in the PC Magazine. Although we lost contact over the years I will always remember Michael as wonderful friend and teammate. I lost Kathy to cancer this past June so I know the pain you are experiencing and my heart goes out to you and your family.

So many memories in just a few short years... Mike loved the beach. Aside from everything mentioned above, he kept his side job of sharpening knives. He never told me he didn't like salmon when I would give it as a thank you for sharpening my knives. I remember his sense of humor - always teasing the Jersey people. My favorite memory is of Mike holding baby Henry in his arms and sitting in the shade of the beach pavilion so Henry could nap.

We are so sorry to hear about Mike´s passing. He was a great father, friend and dedicated Bruins fan. We enjoyed many superbowl parties together with him and Bernadette, even though he was a Giants fan. We are sure he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

I knew Mike from my high school years at Archbishop Stepinac and he was a wonderful young man and I always found him to be pleasant and nice to me. My heart bleeds for his family. My sincere condolences and I will pray for him.

My condolences, Bernadette and family... I am so sorry of learning of Mike's passing. He truly was a good guy. I enjoyed the times I had talking with him about sports, kids, book publishing/business... retirement ... And I remember watching super bowls, and him coming with a Giants jersey when everyone else had Patriots gear. Wish I had seen him again after you moved from Medfield... And wish you and your family that you may have some comfort in the memories of him.
