Michael Schilke Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 12, 2024.
Michael Ronald Schilke, 70, of New York, passed away on August 9, 2024, after a courageous fight with Stage IV lung cancer.

Michael was born on December 10, 1953, to Blanche and Ronald Schilke in Sulfur, Oklahoma. He was raised in Elyria, Ohio where his love of performing began in his own backyard, in a small but well attended production of Mary Poppins. He achieved his Eagle Scout and was honored to be invited to the 1967 XII World Jamboree held in Idaho, where he became a member of the Order of the Arrow. Michael attended Elyria Catholic High School, graduating as Salutatorian of his class in 1972. He spent his first year of college at Denison University before transferring to the University of Cincinnati College- Conservatory of Music (CCM) where he studied theatre, opera, and voice. After graduating from CCM in 1976, he spent time traveling around the world, as an Ambassador with the Pan Am Airways' Singers.

In 1978, Michael moved to New York City, a place he would call home for the next 46 years. He was an immensely talented actor and singer, appearing in regional productions, as well as on the New York stage. Michael was a proud member of both Actors Equity (1977) and SAG-AFTRA (1978). He was a devoted employee of Madison Square Garden for 34 years until his cancer diagnosis forced him to retire.

In 1993, Michael met his loving partner, John Mainieri. They spent 31 years together raising their family of pugs: Cyrano, Roxanne, Oberon, Phebe, and Romeo. Together, they shared a passion for live theatre and enjoyed multiple trips to London.

Michael was a Reiki Master teacher for 50 years; he continued the practice until his last days. Every summer for 29 years, he found delight in his rooftop garden where he cultivated and grew an incredible array of flowers and vegetables. It truly was his masterpiece. Michael also found happiness in the kitchen, where he loved cooking with his own vegetables. He had a refined palate and created many delicious gourmet meals for family and friends.

Michael was preceded in death by his mother Blanche Schilke, his father Ronald Schilke, maternal grandparents Sadie and James Montgomery, and paternal grandparents Catherine and Frederick Schilke. He is survived by siblings Carol Indian (Robert), Mary Sill (John), James Schilke (Gail), Karen Mowry (Ray), and Richard Schilke (Igaitte). He is also survived by nieces and nephews Catherine Theiler, Nicole Abernathy (Andy), Dawn Ebron (Jason), Daniel Schilke, Jessica Orwig, Heather Gribben (James), Jennifer Riggs (Gary), Ryan Mowry (Heidi), Michael Mowry (Liz), Andrea Bray (Richard), Matthew Schilke (Tori), Joshua Korzan, Gabriel Schilke (Clara), Hannah Reneau (James) as well as 22 great nieces and nephews. The role of Uncle is one he cherished. He was not only a mentor, but loved like a parent and acted like a friend. He was the source of fun and wisdom rolled into one amazing Uncle.

Michael also leaves behind many beloved family members, friends, and neighbors; many of whom have followed in his passion for the arts. He was loved and admired by all; he had an enormous effect on every person he encountered on this earth.

...and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest...

Michael and shared a long distance friendship. He was such a great talent I am glad he got to lead an active singing and theater life in NYC. He loved his family and really grieved his mother´s death. I only just learned of his death in a Christmas card from John. May his wide world of friends sing a tune in his honor.Send in the clowns.

Having never met Michael, I found him, while scratching the obituary lines, to be kind, determined, dog loving, authentic, generous, and resilient.

Who could be a better friend ? We all know a person, with whom we´ve crossed paths, that made our lives better. Michael has done that, to me, and never knew .

From Sulfur OK, to Elyria OH, NYC, to Steubenville finale, we came close, thanks to his little sister. Exit the stage, you may hear the applause from behind the curtain. A heavenly encore.
