WEST SPRINGS, SC-- Mrs. Montez Whitehead, lovingly known as "Mrs. Merc", 96, widow of John Daniel "Dan" Whitehead, Sr., of 4470 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, died Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Park Place Nursing Center in Spartanburg.
Mrs. Whitehead was born in West Springs on September 5, 1913, a daughter of the late Clarence and Laura West Alexander. She was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Mary Sue Keith Sunday School class. Mrs. Whitehead was a graduate of West Springs High School and a graduate of Robinson Business College in Spartanburg. She worked in the Auditor's Office in Spartanburg County and also worked alongside her husband at Whitehead Mercantile. Mrs. Whitehead was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are two sons, John Daniel "Danny" Whitehead, Jr. and wife Ginger Allen Whitehead of West Springs and their children, Shelley Alexandra Whitehead and Seth Daniel Whitehead, and Dr. Thomas Alexander Whitehead of Atlanta, GA; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Gary Peterson and Rev. Doug Gilliland. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Danny Whitehead, Tommy Whitehead, Seth Whitehead, Dr. David Keith, Bob Redman, Mansel Gowan, Ray McLees, and Randy Allen.
The family will receive friends in the church social hall immediately following the committal service.

The family is at the home of her son, Danny and Ginger Whitehead, 1250 John Hart Road, Jonesville, SC (West Springs community).
