Nancy Stewart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 20, 2017.
Nancy Lee Stewart LUBBOCK-Nancy Lee Stewart of Taos, NM, a devoted and passionate artist working in watercolor and mixed media, died on Good Friday, April 14, 2017. She was 81 years old. Nancy lived in Taos for 33 years until September of 2016. Due to medical issues, Nancy left the Taos area and had recently lived in Lubbock in the care of her son, Glenn and his wife, Melisha. Born in Pharr, Texas, Nancy was the youngest daughter of Elmer and Willie (Epley) Shortes. She grew up in Odessa, Texas, where she attended and graduated from Odessa High School. After attending college briefly at the University of Colorado in Denver, Nancy attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. While attending classes, she met James Jim E. Davis, whom she later married. They had three children, all boys, and lived happily together until James' death in 1962, while serving his country in the U.S. Air Force as a fighter pilot. Nancy returned to Texas Tech University where she later completed her bachelor's degree in Education, a master's degree, and her doctorate in Fine Arts. She taught art in the Lubbock public schools and at Texas Tech University while completing her post-graduate studies. Nancy met and married Paul Boone in the mid-1960s, and lived in Lubbock. They remained married until Paul's death of heart failure in 1980. Some years later, Nancy married Charles Charley Stewart. They lived in Midland, Texas, while Charley served as Chairman of the Art Department at Midland College. In 1984, Nancy and Charley moved to Taos, where she was a founding member of the Taos Watercolor Society. She is survived by her sister, Celia Davis of New Braunfels, Texas; her three sons, James Jim N. Davis of Pearland, Texas, Glenn Davis of Lubbock, and Garth Davis of Austin, Texas. Nancy was also very happy with and proud of her four grandsons, Sean, Jett, Ryan and Michael, and her granddaughter, Megan. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Raider Ranch in Lubbock for the kindness and wonderful service that they provided Nancy in the final months of her life, and also to the nurses and doctors at Covenant Medical Center for their compassion and excellent medical care. I have two of Nancy´s paintings that she gave me when I lived in Taos and would be happy to give them back to her family. I was her doctor and she just gave me these beautiful paintings and one hangs in our basement and one hangs in our office, and we are getting ready to retire. My name is Terry Dunn and I live in Denver Colorado so if any family member would like some of her ours I have three beautiful paintings, and she was just a wonderful, wonderful person, and so affected my life.

Charles Stewart and I were division chairs together at Midland College and migrated to Taos, NM, at about the same time. I'm sure I met Nancy in Midland, and saw her and Charles often in Taos, at the coop gallery of which they were members, and they invited me to dinner at their beautiful Taos home several times. Good people--good memories. We live in Lubbock now. I read of Nancy's passing in the Taos News. Condolences to the family.
