Dear Micahel and Heather,
I would like to offer my sincere condolences from my family to yours regarding your recent loss. I was reading through the News Tribune and came across the remembrance notice for Nevaeh. I wanted to share with you a few encouraging and comforting scriptures that have helped me personally through such dark times.
The greatest man to walk the earth, Jesus Christ, was pained by the enemy of death. When his friend Lazarus died, the Bible tells us at John 11:33, 35:
“33 Jesus, therefore, when he saw her [Mary] weeping and the Jews that came with her weeping, groaned in the spirit and became troubled; 35 Jesus gave way to tears.”
The Greek word rendered “groaned” is from a verb (em•bri•ma'o•mai) that signifies to be painfully, or deeply, moved. One Bible scholar notes: “Here it can only mean that such deep emotion seized Jesus that an involuntary groan was wrung from His heart.” The expression translated “troubled” comes from a Greek word (ta•ras'so) that indicates agitation. According to a lexicographer, it means “to cause one inward commotion, . . . to affect with great pain or sorrow.” The expression “gave way to tears” comes from a Greek verb (da•kry'o) that means “to shed tears, weep silently.” Even though Jesus would later resurrect, or bring back to life, Lazarus, he still felt the loss.
The faithful man Job asked a question that gives us insight into how God feels about bringing people back to life. At Job 14:14, 15 we read:
“14 If an able-bodied man dies can he live again? All the days of my compulsory service I shall wait,
Until my relief comes. 15 You will call, and I myself shall answer you. For the work of your hands you
will have a yearning.”
Not only does God want to bring our loved ones back, but he has guaranteed it to us. Acts 17:31 says:
“31 He [God] has set a day in which he purposes to judge the inhabited earth in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and he has furnished a guarantee to all men in that he has resurrected him [Jesus] from the dead.”
How comforting and encouraging to know that such promises and comforting thoughts were recorded in the Bible for our benefit!! Such scriptures have comforted my family and I over the years. I hope they do the same for you too.
Some years ago, a friend shared a brochure entitled When Someone You Love Dies with me. This is where all of the encouraging scriptures contained in this letter come from. If you would like a personal copy, you can respond to this message to the address below and I’ll send one free of charge. There are more encouraging thoughts that I’m sure you would appreciate.
Once again, I’d like to extend my sincere condolences regarding your recent loss.
