Norm Mayer and Ron Joyner were two physician leaders who were at the vanguard in developing excellence in Greensboro's emergency care.
I first met Norm on the surgical service at Baptist Hospital in early 1974. His profound spirit for life was evident then; and, in 1981 when my wife and I moved to Greensboro, Norm's was one of the first smiling faces that I encountered as we renewed our friendship in the Humana Hospital ER. I laughed when I saw Norm and Mark Fowler because this was the same dynamic duo that had shared their surgical rotation seven years before. We worked many hours together in the Humana and then later the Cone ER. In recent years our dogs befriended at Lake Brant. After 36 years Norm was still Norm: a much respected physician, a proud father and husband, a colleague and friend. Our whole healthcare community will miss Dr. Mayer. We share our prayers and extend our comfort to his wonderful family.

I had the pleasure of working with Norm in his capacity of Medical Director for GCEMS. He did so much to help develop the top flight program that GCEMS is today. The community will be poorer for his absence. My condolences to his family.

To the Mayer Family: I just returned from vacation and read the email sent to me about Dr. Mayer. There are no words to ease the pain and loss of a loved one, but hopefully you will find some comfort in all the kind words, heartfelt thoughts, and memories each person has of Dr. Mayer. He was a sincere friend to everyone he met. I remember him from the ER, PADI certification, fund raisers, and just running into him out and about. He will be missed by many in every walk of life. May God's Love comfort you during these difficult days.

To the Mayer Family: I am absolutely devastated. Due to my own health problems and being out of contact with the Greensboro medical community I only found out about Norm's illness and death a few minutes ago. I worked with Norm as a resident in the late 1980's and the early 1990's and then as a colleague in the Moses Cone ER when he and Mark Fowler, M.D. hired me in 1993. He was such a great physician, teacher, and friend. I remember Morgan as a little girl running around the ER when she visited her dad but now I know she's all grown up. Please accept my condolences for your tremendous loss. It is a loss for everyone whose life he ever touched.

What a legacy this man offers.... I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Mayer several years ago. He always made everyone feel at home, whether you were another caregiver or a patient, or family member. His presence in the ED was unmistakably that of an expert who was so good at what he did that all who came into contact with him knew he was also just a regular guy that could be trusted with anything. One glance at that big guy with the even bigger smile and everyone nearby felt better!

He has been and will be sorely missed in the Greensboro medical community.... my thoughts and prayers go out to his family, how lucky you all are to have called this man your own.

Looks like Heaven has a new angel!

I had the pleasure of being treated in the emergency room at Cone Hospital by Dr. Mayer on several occasions. I would always ask if he was on and if I could request him to be my Physician during my time in the Emergency Dept. He was such a wonderful man who showed just how much he cared for each patient with his smile, his concern and his caring. He will be deeply missed. My sympathy goes out to his family.

Mayer Family:
I was so sadded by the news of Dr. Mayer's passing. I worked with him many many years ago at Humana Hospital, I was just a file clerk in the Records Dept, but he was always around and the nicest doctor I have ever encountered. Just about 4 years ago I ran into him again at Cone ER where my father was taken after a bad fall. Dr. Mayer was still the same, very happy with a big smile and always making his patients feel safe and secure. Even Daddy fell in love with him. I too will never forget that smile of his. My best to the whole family during this time of grief. May all of the fond memories comfort you all. Regards, Laura Frazier

Beth and family

I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Norm for several years in the ER at Cone. He welcomed this Canadian with open arms and challenged me everyday to be a better person and nurse. I can't tell you how sorry I am to hear of his passing. I speak of him often when I am telling my war stories to friends. From helping me keep it together many times at work to playing ball with him I have many fond memories. He will be missed.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

August 5, 2009

Beth & Family,

Like all of Norm's extended family,
LeAnne and I are very sad about Norm's passing. He was in the top few people we know that was truly compassionate, caring, adventurous and full of vigor for life!

And that joyful laugh! Who have heard it will ever forget!

Four memories I'll always have of "Stormin" Norm:

* An emergency room visit, he took the extra time and care to address my needs.

* During a Canadian helicopter skiing trip with the Greensboro Ski & Sport Club, he took the time to care for my wounded head and pride after a fall.

* Giving me confidence and guidance during my orals for the EMT-I certification.

* As his flight instructor, working together to help with his proficiency and currency while awaiting his FAA airman medical reinstatement. Our cross country flight to Ocracoke for lunch at Howard's Pub during the 2008 summer fires in eastern NC is unforgetable!

Dear Mayer/Stockard Family:

I am so sorry for your loss. Norm was such a special man. And he had a passion for life. His license plate said it all "stormin Norman". Norm always enjoyed live and enjoyed helping others. When Norm and Beth dated and married, their families changed. I've never been around a couple with so much love and respect for each other. Norm, I am glad you enjoyed life and I am very glad that you made my friend and your wife, Beth, very happy.

Thank you also for being a wonderful ER doctor. You have taken care of me on many ocassions and you treated me with so much kindness and compassion.

I love you Norm and will miss you dearly.

To The Mayer family: Beth, I am so sorry we never had the chance to meet. We met Norm and Mark when we started doing work for Moses Cone ER in 1992. We enjoyed the pleasure of Norm's company on several business trips to ER conferences all over the country. He was such a giving, kind person and will be missed by many. Wendy had called a few weeks ago to let us know Norm was ill. We tried to make the "Roast" but circumstances did not permit us. I am so sorry we ran out of time and did not get to visit. Norm was larger than life in so many ways. He introduced us to the tenderloin biscuits he loved for breakfast and so many other great food places. We loved him and will dearly miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dr. Mayer's Family,
We both held Dr. Mayer in high regard. His dedication to establish protocols for coordinating GCES with Cone ER, his kindness and personal treatment as an ER doctor when we were under his care, his understanding advice as a fellow pilot, all were greatly appreciated and admired. "This I recall to mind, therefore I have confidence. It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, His compassions never fail, they are renewed every morning. Great is Thy faithfulness."

Dear Beth and family,

Our Hero (and he would not like to be called a Hero) has gone to a beautiful and pain free place. The world has lost one of the greatest.

In our eyes he was a great physician but that uplifting smile and leadership was an irreplacable quality.

I was just a clerk and my daughter was a fragile EMT. I was later a liason between doctors. nurses, chaplins and patients in Crisis. I was there 10 years. My daughter, with the encouragement of Dr. Mayer and his closely knit staff went on to become one the greatest nurses. She was there for about 16 years. As she watched Dr. Mayer and staff caring so much it made her a strong, caring, giving RN (and always with a helpful smile) just like her Hero - Dr. Mayer.

I left and had been gone many years and brought my Mom (who lived 101 years)to the ER. I wanted to speak to Dr. Mayer, but I thought he would not remember me and then he looked my way.
He said "Hello Edna and how is Donna?

We both are better caregivers and give with a smile just like Dr. Mayer.

Donna is out of town and could not attend. We feel your loss so deeply.
Donna is now working at the new Hospice Home in Lexington.

All of you are in our thougts and prayers and someday we will be together again.

Love and Prayers.

To Dr. Mayer's family,
Jim and I were so saddened to read of Dr. Mayer's death. We both have such great memories of this wonderful guy. Our time with him goes back to Humana Hospital days. We moved to Gsboro from Winston-Salem in 1977. I began work at Humana as a nurse anesthetist, my husband, Jim, was a State Trooper. When I later transferred to Cone O.R., Dr. Mayer was in the ER. Jim enjoyed many work related visits to Cone ER when Dr. Mayer was working, or his good friend, Dr.Fowler was there. How very easily Dr. Mayer endeared himself to all who crossed his path. He was a physician and human being who truly cared for others.
Our heartfelt sympathy to his family.

Sincerely,
Jim & Candy George

To the family of Dr.Mayer
I am writing this message to let you know that Dr.Mayer was very respected and adored by all of the staff that got the chance to know him. He treated everyone with respect and never spoke a harsh word to anyone. No matter what hand was dealt to us during the course of our shift he still had a smile on his face. He taught me alot about just being able to deal with the issues at hand and looking forward to a better tomorrow. This job is worth working when you have a physician like he was. We will miss him dearly and Pray That the God you serve will comfort your hearts Now and Always.

Dr. Mayer was an inspiration to me! As a new recruit at Moses Cone 4 years ago, his was one of the first faces I remember! With his booming voice, and radiating spirit, he encouraged me "enjoy life" and "GET FIT." He told me endless stories of hiking, biking, and making memories in regards to fitness and always lifted my spirit when I felt like "giving up on exercise"! I wear his dolphin sticker proudly on my badge, and there it will remain, as will his memory! Dr. Mayer, tell my Grandma and Grandpa, and little Brendan that I love them too! One extra star is shining tonite!

To the family, I am truly sorry for your loss, however he is in a much better place and finally at peace and painfree. I pray that your memories will sustain you during the coming days and that eventually the memories will help you cherish his life and love.
My thoughts and prayers go to you during this sorrowful time and my prayer for your peace is always there.
It was a pleasure to have known Dr. Mayer and do know that he will be missed.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I worked with Dr Mayer for the last 11 years and always enjoyed his smiling face, sense of humor, and the ribbing we would occasionally engage in over MSU and Purdue football and basketball! He will be missed.

Beth and Family,
I am sorry for your loss, but please know that I am thinking of you. I will always remember the great times in the "old ER" with the old crew and how much fun Norm added to that. I am glad to have been a part of that.
My thoughts and prayers are with you,

Beth, Rob, Amy, Erin and Morgan, I am truly at a loss for words. Although we haven't seen you guys much lately, Norm will always hold a special place in our hearts as a big supporter of Nicholas and his soccer, as being our "family" doctor when we were in need and as being just an overall funny and caring person! We will miss him dearly!

Love - Kim, Mark, Nicholas and MacKenzie

Erin, Rob and Amy
I know the pain each of you are going through. There are no words I can offer to help you on your journey of healing, it is a personal one. I can however tell you there will come a day that you will reflect and cherish every single memory you had with Norm without feeling the pain you do today. He is embedded in your hearts and you are each better people for having known and loved him.

To the Mayer family... may the Lord's blessings and comfort continue to be with you. Dr Mayer's contributions to the Community have been many. His efforts in the mid 1980's in establishing the local SCUBA & Water Rescue Team (GASP, Inc.) still are helping those in peril today. Know that his efforts have been appreciated and that he will be missed. David Albright - Chief, Guilford County Water Rescue Team
