MICHAEL RONIS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 3, 2009.
Michael Ronis died Thursday morning, Oct. 29, 2009, at Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut. He was 60 years old. Mr. Ronis was the founding chef and owner of the restaurant Carmine's in New York City, Atlantic City and at the Atlantis Resort at Paradise Island in the Bahamas. He also founded Virgil's Real BBQ in Times Square.Mr. Ronis wrote "Carmine's Family-Style Cookbook," which was released to critical acclaim in 2008. Mr. Ronisgrew up in Norma and, after graduating from Vineland High School, he went on to attend and graduate from the Connaught Hotel French School of Cooking in London. He became the first American chef at the Connaught Hotel, where he cooked for Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles and other royalty. Mr. Ronis also ran the kitchen at Harry's Bar in Italy. Mr. Roniswas widely recognized in the food industry and received numerous international awards. He was an innovator and was ahead of his time. Many Manhattanites will remember a restaurant called Sweet Victory, where he designed a concept of low-fat, low-calorie foods years before the term "spa food" was coined. He also founded Sassy Sliders 10 years before tiny hamburgers became the rage. Mr. Ronis always loved food and enjoyed going with friends to try all the new restaurants. He would sometimes hit five or six places a night, sampling everything on the menu that interested him. He was adored by his many family members and friends. He is survived by his wife, Elle Ronis; his sisters, Shelly Ronis Ross and her husband Randy of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Susan Ronis of Oakland, Calif.; as well as a nephew, Andrew Adams and family. Graveside services were held Friday at Temple Beth El Cemetery in Stamford, Conn. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Outreach to Pets in Need (OPIN), 201 Magee Ave., Stamford, CT 06902.

I miss you a lot chef, I am currently writing something with you in it. I never got the chance to thank you for helping me become the chef I am today. Not the same without you. I really hope you met my dad up there and keeping a spot warm for me.

To the Ronis Family,
I was very saddened to learn of the death of Michael. It has been so many years since I have been in touch with any of you, but those days of growing up in Norma have left an everlasting memory of the people and families who I knew so well. I extend my sympathy and condolences to all of you.

Dear Elle, I have never met you or Michael but feel like I have as your restaurants have been very joyous to our families -- and when we think about going as a family to NY without a doubt that was the restaurant of choice -- we couldn't get in one time and happened about Virgil's and thought it seemed so familiar and comforting and then we found out it was part of the group-- was very nice -- especially the napkins -- we have been to Carmines in NY, Atlantic City and Virgils -- on the sad part, this year, unfortunately, we too have just endured the trama of brain cancer -- hopefully your experience wasn't as difficult as ours -- may they rest in peace!

Dearest Ellen Ronis:

I wanted you to know how deeply your husband's legacy will remain with me. He was an incredible man whose deep love for both Carmine's and Virgil's will never be forgotten.

I first met you while I worked at a restaurant, Josie's, on the Upper West Side of New York City. You deeply impressed me by your eccentric passion for your husband's gifts as a founding member of Carmine's. One day, I thought, I'll work for him. Year's later in 1997 I joined the staff of Virgil's and never forgot our meeting. Michael became a daily part of my life in his constant striving to make his creations more perfect. His gift is the very reason for my longevity at this establishment.

I missed seeing you at the Memorial service at Carmine's in his honor.

God bless you!

Dear Shelley and Susan,
I fondly remember your parents and brother from our days at Norma School. I was so proud to tell my friends that the owner and founder of one of their favorite restaurants, Carmine's, was a schoolmate of mine. I am saddened that another of the Norma-Brotmanville gang is gone, but know and trust that God is with you and yours during this difficult time.

To Michael's family - Susan & Shelly,
We are saddened by Michael's untimely passing. I grew up just a 1/2 mile up Almond Road from your parents farm. I celebrated with your folks as each of you were born. As a teenager I worked with your parents and grandparents and Al's siblings' Marvin and Sid, but mostly with your father, Al, keeping records and vaccinating chickens and working with him on his chicken breeding business and hatchery. I knew your family very well and often had lunch or dinner with you and your parents. In the evenings, when your folks wanted to go out, I stayed and watched all of you. I am so sad to hear about Michael's passing away. Just a few months ago I heard about his cookbook and I bought many copies and gave them to our children. I was hoping to come to NY soon to eat at Carmine's and get an autograph from Michael. When I had an office in Manhattan for about 10 years in the 1970-80's. Sheila (Sirott), also from Vineland and I would visit and eat with Michael at his latest restaurant innovation. Michael was a kind and generous person and a joy to be with. We will all miss him.

Michael's family:

My most heartfelt condolences to all. In our high school years we were inseparable and afterwards we stayed in sporatic but amiable contact. Last December we met at Carmine's in AC and had a brief but enjoyable reunion. The fact that life had taken us on different paths never changed the affection we had for each other. I will miss Mike very much and am saddened that the promises we made each other to reconnect will never be fullfilled. I just want all his family to know that Mike will be missed sorely. With my sincerest sympathy, Serge

Thank you all so much for your kind and gentle words to us. Michael was Carmine's - he was the kindest soul. He never forgot his "roots" - we would talk about Norma for hours with us, laugh, had great memories and just be silly. The Esposito name would always come up. His talents came from our mother, Sylvia, our grandmothers Alice and Rose and our beloved Aunt Gloria - how she could cook. Mike loved talking to them about cooking, Carmine's, creating new recipes. He took nothing for granted - he continued to stay so passionate about his art - food was everything. Going out with him was such a treat - we always tried everything on the menu to eat. I loved him deeply and miss him terribly - he was kind, gentle, loving and ever so generous. A humble beautiful man! Thank you all for your words of comfort.

We are so sorry to hear about Michael. We would see him annually when he was a guest judge at a charity "Cook-Off" event held each year to benefit Rett's Syndrome... a charity we know was close to his heart. We will miss all the good times and good food we shared with him.

Dear Susan, Shelly, and family members, I heard this very sad news just this morning. It is shocking to think that one of our dear childhood friends, Michael, has left us. We are all very proud of his successes and shared so many happy times growing up in Norma where we were more like relatives than neighbors. He is in my prayers-- may God protect him and give him eternal peace. Debbie Kurlansky-Winer

Ellen, Shelly and Susan,

I'm so sorry to hear about Michael. It just seems like yesterday that we were playing baseball in either his front yard or in mine with the neighborhood kids. I still have 8mm home movies of Michael and myself playing for Vipole where he was the catcher and I pitched. Our lives took us in different directions but I'll never forget growing up as one of the Norma boys nor will I ever forget all the happy moments shared with the Ronis family. Memories never die....thank God for that!!!!!

Dear Elle and family,
My sincere condolences on your loss.I was a childhood friend of Michael's from Norma ( I also now live in Ct). He was my dancing partner when we were in high school and we were devotees of the Friday nite dances at our local Catholic Church, much to the chagrin of our Jewish parents. He was a terrific friend to me during those formative years. I"ll always remember him with great fondness.

Not only has the restaurant world lost a brilliant chef and food professional but so has the animal world lost a cherished animal welfare advocate and kind supporter. On behalf of OPIN, Inc. and the Stamford Animal Shelter I send not only our condolences but our heartfelt thanks for having been thought of during this very difficult time by your request that memorial gifts be made to our organization in Michael's memory.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Elle,
I don't know if you will remember me but I had the privilege of working with Michael when he was the Executive Chef of Dock's and I was the General Manager. I learned so much from Michael and always appreciated his love of food. In fact, we almost opened a restaurant together in CT prior to Carmine's. He was an extremely passionate and dedicated chef who always worked towards excellence. The food world has lost a true devotee and he will be dearly missed. I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time. I know that Michael cherished you and loved you deeply.
