Alan Hurd Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 25, 2013.
HURD, ALAN LINCOLN 75, of North Smithfield, died October 23, 2013 at home with his loving family by his side after a long courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the beloved husband of Cornelia (Kokolski) Hurd. He was born in Woonsocket on February 12, 1938, the son of the late Frank C. and Dorothy M. (Beauregard) Hurd. He was a kind and gentle man, always with a ready smile, and great love for his family. Mr. Hurd was an architectural engineer and journeyman union carpenter, having worked over the years mainly for Westcott Construction and several other construction firms as an estimator, project manager, superintendent, corporate safety director, and carpenter. He retired on February 28, 2003. Some projects he worked on included Gillette Stadium, personally crafting Bob Kraft's bar, many buildings in the Boston Area including Harvard University, Millennium Towers and the Prudential Tower building, as well as many other schools, churches, hospitals, and telephone communication buildings. He was proud of the home he designed and built on land on which he was 12th generation of his Mowry family ancestry. He was a graduate of Woonsocket High School and Wentworth Institute of Technology. He served time in the 118th Engineers Battalion, Co. B of the RI National Guard. He was a member of Morningstar Lodge #13 of Freemasons in Woonsocket, RI, a life member of Wallum Lake Rod & Gun Club, NRA life member, the Mowry Family Association, and Carpenter's Local #535 in Norwood, MA, serving many years as trustee. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, skiing, target shooting, and hunting. A proud moment occurred in 2009, when he shot a 200 pound 8 point buck with his handmade flintlock muzzle loader on old family land across from his home. He is survived by his son, John Hurd, of Middleton, WI, his daughter, Susan Hurd of Jamestown, RI; and his two grandchildren, Lauren and David Hurd of WI. He was the brother of Eleanor Vaughn of Sarasota, FL and the uncle of several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 27, 2013, at the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St., Woonsocket from 3pm to 7pm. His funeral service will be on Monday, October 28, 2013 at 11AM in Slatersville Congregational Church, 25 Greene St., No. Smithfield, RI. Burial will take place in Blackstone Cemetery, Mendon St, Blackstone, MA. At the family's request for those attending the services, due to serious chemical sensitivities, please refrain from wearing scented fragrances. Contributions in Alan's memory may be made to Miriam Hospital Foundation, c/o the Cancer Center, PO Box H, Providence, RI 02901 or Slatersville Congregational Church, 175th Anniversary Fund to help preserve the historic landmark for future generations, PO Box 808, Slatersville, RI 02876. www.holtfuneralhome.com

Connie, I am so sorry to hear of Alan's passing. Although I knew him only briefly before moving to Texas, I have very fond memories of what a kind man he was. My brother Richard & sister in law Marcia kept me updated on his condition and I prayed for him daily. May you take comfort in the memories you will hold of the life you had together. So sorry to hear of Mr. Hurd's passing. My father always spoke in glowing terms of him when they worked together when my dad, Pete, was at Westcott. He considered him one of the truly good guys on the planet.
