Odilia Leal Self
HOUSTON, TX. -
Odilia Leal Self, 82, passed away in her home in Houston, TX on February 19, 2015 from complications with breast cancer. She died peacefully in her sleep while surrounded by her friends and family.
She is survived by her husband Donald Self, son Jesse Self and wife Mary, daughter Cynthia Webber, son Andy Self and wife Monica, grandsons Mathew, Jesse and Andrew, and granddaughters Katrina and Andrea.
She was preceded in death by her son, Bill A. Self, father, Fructoso Leal Sr., mother, Clemencia G. Leal, brother, Fructoso "Toti" Leal, brother-in-law Carlos Cantu, and brother-in-law Jose de los Santos.
Odilia was born on July 28, 1932 to Fructoso and Clemencia Leal in Harlingen, TX, where she grew up and eventually met Donald L. Self. She and Donald married in 1959 and moved to McAllen, TX where they started their family. They later moved to Houston in 1966 to settle down and start a business. Odilia spent the majority of the early years in Houston raising her four children and working at the family-owned business. She later worked at Houston Lighting and Power where she retired.
Odilia was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and loved spending time with her family. During the early years she could often be found helping out at the children's school or at church. She was a devout Catholic her entire life and was well known for her outgoing personality and friendly demeanor. As the kids grew up, Odilia pursued her own interests, which included square dancing, traveling, and gardening.
During retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her grandkids and would always go out of her way to purchase a small gift for them before visits. When she wasn't spending time with her family, she was volunteering at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, TX, where she was highly praised for her interpersonal and bilingual skills.
At her request, cremation has taken place and will be followed by a Memorial Service and Celebration of Life reception. The service will be held on March 14, 2015 at 2:00PM at St. Benedict the Abbot Catholic Church in Houston, TX.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Odilia's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or St. Benedict the Abbot Catholic Church.
