Olivia Marie Sampson Holmes

Olivia Marie Sampson Holmes, age 85, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, in UPMC Presbyterian. She was born March 31, 1917, in Americus, Ga., daughter of the late Jeremiah and Maggie Sampson. Mrs. Holmes was a faithful member of the Greater Emmanuel A.M.E. Zion Church in Aliquippa, where she was a deaconess and member of the Women's Auxiliary. She retired after 25 years of service as a matron for Aliquippa School District. Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Holmes; two sons, the Rev. Harold Holmes and Fred Holmes; and three sisters and two brothers, Margaret Harris, Cynthia Robinson, Annie Butler, Frank Sampson and Turner Sampson. She leaves to mourn her passing three daughters, two sons-in-law, two sons and two daughters-in-law, Cecile and John Fields of Aliquippa; William A. and Edythe Holmes and Margaret Ann Holmes, all of Oceanside, Calif., Clyde A. and Martha Holmes of Warren, Ohio and Rose Tomblin and Peyton Tomblin of Lanham, Md.; 11 grandchildren, Ethel Fields, John "Jay" and Tinita Fields and Andrea Fields, all of Aliquippa, Antoinette and Bryan Chaney and Kimberlie and Brandon Hawkins, all of Oceanside, Thedra "Niki" and Michael Johnson of Woodbridge, Va., Brandi Lyn Holmes of Erie, Pa., Phillip Homes, Quincy III, Sondra and David Lancaster and Peyton and Jennifer Tomblin of Iceland and Allisa J. Tomblin of Lanham, Md.; 11 great-grandchildren, Rashad, Jaleel, Darrien and Javod Fields, all of Aliquippa, Sheldon Chaney and Justin Hawkins, both of Oceanside, Da'Mr-Shaye, Ariana and Brytny Johnson, all in Virginia, David Lancaster Jr. of Vista, Calif. and Peyton Tomblin IV of Iceland; a sister, Ellen Comer of Taylor, Mich.; a godson, Darryl Simmons of Pittsburgh; two daughters-in-law, Almeta Holmes of Monroeville and Sallie Holmes of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters-in-law, Lucy Holmes of Coraopolis; Mae Ethel Holmes of Burtonsville, Md. and Flora W. Day of Albany, Ga.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Greater Emmanuel A.M.E. Zion Church, 185 Sixth Ave., Aliquippa, where a service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday with her pastor the Rev. Ralph Hill giving the eulogy. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Park Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the GOODEN & BROWN FUNERAL HOME, 214 Fifth Ave., Aliquippa.
