In 1978 at a cross roads in my life at 18 years of age.
Should I go to Red River Community College for hospitality management or not ?
At the prompting of my step dad he said call Champs and talk to Oscar Grubert. I had never met the man.
I called and asked for Mr Grubert and he said You got him. I said Mr Grubert does your company recognize the RRCC hospitality course and hire it's graduates?Because Mr Grubert I am wondering if I should take that course.
His next words changed my life. He said..... Get on with a chain kid they will teach you everything you need to know.
I thanked him and hung up.
I later went to work in a chain and became the youngest GM at 19 years of age
Since then I have done many things in the hospitality world. And I have told my Oscar Grubert story hundreds of times.
I never got to say thank you Mr Grubert but I am now.
Peace and Love to your family.
You have influenced hundreds by influencing me. Rest well

Oscar was a giant in the restaurant industry. A pioneer of franchising in Canada, he developed many memorable restaurant concepts and nightclubs, too. My first management position was in his Specialty Division, 28 years ago, where I learned how to open and operate a restaurant or two or three or four... He was always generous with his time and helped people realize there dreams of self reliance and entrepreneurship. He had an infectous sense of humour and never failed to show it during the most stressfull of times. I'm saddened to learn the news, but grateful for the opportunity to have worked for this "champion" of the restaurant industry.

My sincere respects to Beth, Nolan and family.

Dear Beth, Nolan and families,
The loss of a parent is sadder than imaginable but despite his recent illness, the fact your father was so active and vital up until less than two years ago, makes his death truly shocking.
Richard joins me in sending our sincere and heartfelt sympathy.

Love to all

I just heard of the passing of Oscar and shock is an understatement. May the pain of Oscar's passing release and sustain wonderful memories of his love and goodness to Ruth, his children, his brother and sister and the rest of his family and friends. I find it difficult to accept Oscar's passing and equally difficult to find the words to express the loss. May his memory to all who were close to Oscar be with them forever.Your cousin Alex Sommer and my wife Elaine and my family.
