PATRICIA JOBB Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Oct. 18, 2012.
JOBB, Patricia Ann
Peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital in Sechelt, BC, on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at age 61. Beloved wife of Wayne Jobb who was by her side. Cherished daughter of Anna Tonkin and the late Lloyd S. Tonkin, London, ON. Daughter-in-law of Doris Jobb, Truro, NS. Dear sister of Susan (Richard), Toronto, ON. Loved sister-in-law of Al (Kathy), Brian (Joan), Gail (Gary), Janet (Michael), Dean (Kerry). Devoted Aunt to Gina, Gregg, Grant, Keri, Ryan, Anna, Stuart, Neil, Erin, Scott, Matthew, Evan, and Benjamin. Niece to Ralph (Phyllis) Tonkin, Port Moody, BC, Mary Lariviere, St. Catharines, ON, Mike (Fran) Kotchan, Victoria, BC. Cousins Arlene and Alan Cimprich, St. Catharines, ON. Bob, Doug (Pauline), Karen (George).
Born in St. Catharines, ON. Her parents encouraged in her an early love of literature, music and movies that became life long. She earned a Bachelor of Arts, Honors Journalism from the University of Western Ontario in 1974 and started a career in journalism with Bowes Publishers. She later served as publicist for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and editor for the Credit Society of Manitoba before returning to journalism. Pat and Wayne were married in Kenora, ON in 1977 and moved to Hinton, AB in 1979 where they were editor and publisher, respectively, of the weekly Hinton Parklander. Pat made a career change in 1985 when she enrolled at the University of Alberta. She received her Master of Library Science Degree in 1987. A move to Grande Prairie, AB provided an opportunity to apply her acquired skills at the newly formed Peace Library System. She was System Director from 1989 to 1995. A move to Sherwood Park afforded a new challenge and Pat joined the staff of Edmonton Public Library as the special projects coordinator. She served as Executive Director, Public Services 1998 until her retirement in 2008. A member of the Library Association of Alberta, serving as President 1992-93, and the Canadian Library Association, serving as Executive member 2003-06. She received the CAPL/Brodart Outstanding Public Library Service Award in 2008.
Pat and Wayne started to live their retirement dream with a move to Pender Harbour, BC on the beautiful sunshine coast in 2008. Pat soon volunteered her journalism skills in assisting with editing of the Women of Pender Harbour; their voices, their history.
Pat had a great love of the outdoors and nature that manifested itself in her photos, paintings, sketches and fine art prints. She earned a Fine Arts Certificate from the University of Alberta in 2007. In her artist's statement she states - "As an artist, I have been profoundly influenced by sailing trips made over the years exploring a variety of coastlines, particularly the rugged BC coast. Each voyage has been a voyage of discovery. Those discoveries are reflected in my drypoint (intaglio) images that have evolved from looking closely at the tactile nature of the sometimes imperfect landscapes that surround me." The acquisition of a Rembrandt style press built by brother-in-law Gary Collier was a highlight in Pat's art career.
Her drypoint piece 'Tofino Tree' recently received an Award of Excellence in the 2011 Federation of Canadian Artists exhibition. It was also juried in the 32nd Mini Print International of Cadaques, 2012, Barcelona, Spain. 'Tofino Tree II' won the intaglio print category in the 4th Annual Miniature Biennale Exhibition in Ottawa.
In recent years Pat and Wayne were bolstered by the support of family and friends. Also the extraordinary care Pat received from many dedicated healthcare professionals at the BC Cancer Agency in Vancouver. Special thanks to: Dr. Stephen Chia, Dr. Villa Restrepo, Dr. Sara Wadge, Dr. Isabelle Hughan and Nurses and staff at St. Mary's Hospital, Sechelt, BC.
A Celebration of Pat's Life will be held at the Pender Harbour School of Music (Madeira Park) on Tuesday, October 23 - 2:00 pm. An exhibition of Pat's art will be on display at the Harbour Gallery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation BC/Yukon, 300 - 1090 W. Pender Street, Vancouver, BC V6E 2N7 or http://www.cbcf.org/bc/Getinvolved/Donate/Pages/default.aspx

I am so sorry for the loss of your wife and Mother. Pat was a library director when I was involved in the Interior design. She was a wonderful person to work with and collaborative in her approach to planning the solutions. She had a warmth and a sense of humor that made the projects breeze along. A lovely warm and sensitive lady.
I am so very sorry for your loss.

I was very sorry to learn of Pat's passing. As a newcomer to the world of system libraries, I very much appreciated the wisdom, humour and friendship that Pat provided. It was also great swapping stories with another former Londoner and Western Grad.

I had the opportunity to meet Pat and her beloved husband Wayne during my exchange student year in Grande Prairie, back in 1990. Pat and and Wayne were great friends of the Tillners, my host family. I always thought of Pat as a wonderful caring woman for others in the community and dedicated to her friends.
Wayne, please receive my condolences. Big hugs from Mexico.

My thoughts are with you, Wayne and family, on Pat's passing. We met at UofA, class of '87 MLS, and I always appreciated Pat's dry sense of humour and her practicality. Her spirit will be missed.

Pat was so influential during some of my formative teen years and I think of her often Wayne. I'll never golf with a clump of dirt on my irons again and will always know how to properly weigh down a boat with food and wine for a camping trip! She was a strong business woman who always set the bar high and one I consider to be my earliest mentor. My condolences.
