Patrick McGlennon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 29, 2023.
MCGLENNON, Patrick William (Pat) passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on December 28, 2023 at the age of 73. Pat, the son of Richard and Dolores McGlennon was born in San Francisco, CA on December 29, 1949. Pat is survived by his high school sweetheart and devoted wife of 51 years, Sue, and their children Eric McGlennon (Jen), Shawna Owen (Bryan), Katie Ehrlich (Drew), and Patrick McGlennon (Erin), his grandchildren, Jayda, Shane, and Beckett McGlennon, Callie and Kyla Owen, and Nolan and Nora Ehrlich. He is also survived by his sister, Maureen Glanville, his brothers, Mike, Brian, and Rich McGlennon, and nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.

At a very young age, Pat's family moved to San Mateo where he went to St. Gregory's Grammar School. He could always be found out in the street or at a local park playing some kind of ball with his buddies. He then attended Serra High School where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. In recognition of his tremendous athletic abilities, Pat was later inducted into the Serra High School Athletic Hall of Fame. After leaving Serra, he attended Washington State University and then graduated in 1972 from San Jose State University. Upon graduation, Pat returned to Serra where he taught world history and coached football and basketball. As a teacher and a coach, Pat mentored his students and athletes and his emphasis was to teach, to motivate, and to have them compete at one's highest individual level possible.

After seven years at Serra, Pat joined the company his dad started, The R. J. McGlennon Co. (Maclac), a lacquer manufacturing company. He worked there with his dad and 3 brothers as a salesman for 41 years and then retired when the business was sold in 2020.

Pat was full of life and lived his life to the fullest. Throughout his entire life he was extremely competitive in everything he did, whether it be raising his 4 children, interacting with his grandkids, sales, sports, or just hanging out with friends. Pat did everything with 110% effort. If there was one thing that Pat was, that was determined. No matter what the challenge or request was, he gave his all to ensure he exceeded all expectations whether for himself or others. Until his death from esophageal cancer, he continued to play baseball, golf, and cycled each day of the week, refusing to let the cancer interfere with his active lifestyle. Pat had a tremendous sense of humor and was very frequently the life of a party. Furthermore, he always tried to bring the best out of each person he interacted with, making them feel very special. However, Pat was also well known for his mouth, not holding back his opinions and he had a knack for telling it like it is. He always told you the truth even if it wasn't what you wanted to hear. His extensive vocabulary was more than highly proficient at knowing more curse words than most people.

As much as a successful business person and sportsman that Pat was, above all else, he treasured his family the most. He reveled in the love of his close knit family and felt so blessed that all of his children lived close by. He was a loyal friend to many and had a knack for making people feel good about themselves. Pat was an honorable man and touched the lives of so many. The loss of his presence assures us that our lives will never be the same. On the other hand, given Pat's zest for life, things may never be the same in heaven. May Pat now rest in peace in the loving arms of his Father in heaven.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend the memorial services for Pat at Saint Raymond Church (1100 Santa Cruz Ave, Menlo Park). A vigil/wake will be held on January 3rd at 6pm and a Celebration of Life Mass will be on January 4th at 10:30am.

The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to Saint Francis Center in Pat's name.

I was privileged to be Pat's teammate on the UCSF basketball team that toured China in 1993, as well as his surgeon and friend. He was one of the most inspirational people I have ever known.

Condolences to everyone in the extended McGlennon family. I just learned tonight of Pat´s passing, and can think only that there´s certainly a very large McGlennon-Haycock-Hurley party he´s now joined. Pat´s obviously left a wonderful legacy behind - family and friends, good work and good memories, such energy and love shared with so many. I send a large Haycock hug to all of you! - Mary Haycock Lock

Mr. McGlennon was the dad of one of my close childhood friends, Katie McGlennon, and our St. Raymonds basketball coach. I have so many fond memories of being with the McGlennon family and of Mr. McGlennon good-naturedly embarrassing me about my good manners at the expense of Katie and Patrick. (Who for the record also had good manners!)

As a basketball coach, Mr. McGlennon was the best! He was consistently warm, funny, and tough - in the best way possible. You always knew what was expected of you and where you stood. I recall one practice where before starting a drill, he asked if anyone had a preference for their drill partner. Two unassuming souls raised their hands and shared their preferred partners as Mr. McGlennon smiled and patiently listened. He then promptly paired them with completely different teammates than the ones they had requested. Those teammates never made that mistake again. :)

I will remember Mr. McGlennon with such warmth and am deeply grateful to have known such a wonderful person. As his obituary states, he had a knack for making people feel special and seen. What an incredible gift that was for all of us who who were lucky enough to know him. <3

I knew Pat through our baseball league. He was pretty quiet and unassuming, until he saw us do something wrong on the field. We then saw another side of him.
But his advice came from the heart and I think we all knew that about him. He was a terrific teammate -- and a first-class opponent.
I will definitely miss him.
RIP

I knew Pat originally by legend only as I played basketball at Serra in the mid 80´s after he had already moved on. His legend lived strong as we all wanted to dive for a loose ball and take a charge to impress both he and Bud Presley even though we barely knew them. As We got to know Pat and Sue later thru his best friend Tim Minahan our entire family considered them family as we all throughly enjoyed ever bbq, wedding and time we spent with Sue and Pat. Guys like Pat simply don´t exist anymore, a true legend. RIP

Pat was one of those teammates you loved having on your side. He upped the team's confidence level with both his skill and competitiveness. I first met Pat when he joined the Fog City team for several of the Arizona baseball tournaments. With Pat came Larry and Tony, the Three Amigos. Pat will be sorely missed by everyone who had the good fortune of knowing him.

I was shocked to hear about Pats passing last week. I new he had some heath issues but I did not know how serious it was. I have known and played ball with Pat for 14 years. He was a great 3rd baseman and baseball buddy he saved me many times from having to run a ball down in left field. We will mis Pats sense of humor and banter. Rest in peace my friend.

Got to know Pat when I started teaching at Serra in `77 and enjoyed bantering with him! Also I enjoyed playing faculty pick-up basketball games after school; he was a fierce competitor! I recall how he got together one year after the season a night league of inter murals for students and faculty-lot of fun and good interaction between faculty and students.
Wishing Sue and his family my prayers of support; May Pat RIP.

Most of the time you would hear Pat before you saw him - the booming voice giving someone the business, always in a good-natured way. Ready to compete at the drop of a hat, you could sometimes see him waiting in the golf course parking lot just so he could brag about getting the "best" parking spot. God help you if you had a three-foot putt to tie him. As rare as it was, there was no finer feeling than getting a "W" against Pat - for this is how he viewed life. That was one of the reasons we all loved Pat, for bringing the best out in each of us. I want to thank Pat for being a true friend for almost 50 years - so many great memories.

And, yes, if you listen closely you can hear him giving someone the business. You call those wings.

Love, Pete

I first met Pat in 1984-85 when we played together on the San Mateo Outlaws. Pat was a great receiver who could really go get the football. He was on the all 25 yr team and is one of the few players to have his number retired. We were later teammates in the Men´s Senior Baseball League, playing in tournaments in Sacramento, Vegas and the World Series in Arizona. Pat was a great competitor, teammate and always played hard. Nothing short of his best effort was good enough for Pat. I will always remember his pre-game stretching routine that would take about an hour. Pat was a super good athlete, a great friend and a better person. He will be missed. RIP. Don McCarthy

We first met our Freshman year at Serra and began our friendship during practice and games. There I learned how competitive Pat was. A favorite memory came years later when I asked him what he thought made teams teams consistent winners. He answered "the ability and resolve to compete". Pat owned and demonstrated that trait more than anyone I have ever known.
I will always remember the weekly Poker nights, golf rounds, the MacLaquer softball games and camaraderie of those teams. Dinner parties and Resturant nights with a core group of friends along with our wives were fantastic.
There's so much more to say but to say I loved Pat, I respected Pat as a good man and miss him very much.

I was lucky enough to play basketball for Pat for many years. He was a simply an incredible coach and used basketball as a way to teach us about life - how to compete, how to work, how to be teammate, just to name a few. I can personally attest to his highly proficient vocabulary of curse words and honesty can't think of Pat without feeling a need to get in a defensive stance in fear of getting a rant in my direction! Pat has shaped a lot in my life and I'll forever be grateful for the time we had together.

It´s been more than 25 years of being Pat´s local teammate and Arizona World Series roommate. I always thought I knew how to compete in baseball, but boy was I wrong. Pat was the ultimate competitor, and not just in baseball, but almost anything he was engaged in. He was strong-willed, opinionated and, at times, would tell you what your own opinion should be. As a coach, Pat brought out the best and the worst in you. His direct, to-the-point assessment, spared no one.

Pat was an exceptional third baseman. He didn't like pitchers, like me, who walked batters and would show his displeasure by a few choice words and/or distinct body language.

Larger than life, both on and off the diamond, Pat leaves us with some of the best and craziest of times, after living a very well-played life.

Played with and against Pat for that past 20 years in MSBL.also we played against each other when he was a Serra and i was at St. Elizabeth. he was a terrific 3rd baseman and as a pull hitter did my best to not hit it his way. always looked forward to being around him because i knew things were going to be good. even up to his last weeks we would work out and he worked harder than anybody. Pat was a perfect example and reason why we continue to play this game. we all learned from him about his work ethic and love of the game. he truly was loved by all of us that still put on the uniform. it is going to be different not seeing the "vacuum" at 3rd and sharing our banter back and forth. he was so very special . Pat joined my golf foursome at a SJSU Baseball fundraising tournament at Coyote Creek Golf Coarse one year. On the 17th hole he pulled out his Driver on the fairway, 275 yrds. from the pin on a green that was entirely protected by water. With the sun setting and shining directly in his eyes he hit a rocket shot with the ball landing just 10 feet from the pin...!! Ok... so he missed his Eagle putt but that second shot was an incredible lifelong memory!

I really could have responded to each of these questions, my time with Pat revolved around baseball, for over 10 years we shared the field, both in the REBL and many trips to Arizona for the MSBL world series. My nickname for Pat was `Hoover" for his ability to field his position around 3rd base. My favorite memories were his obsession with his hair, keeping the soldiers in place, taking him to his first concert at Konocti, and playing golf. I will miss his sarcastic sense of humor. Rest in peace my friend.
