Patrick McSorley Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Jun. 13, 2008.

Patrick John McSorley February 21, 1927 - June 5, 2008 On Thursday, June 5th, Pat passed away peacefully at the Quayside home he loved, with the sights and sounds of the Fraser River at his window and his loving family nearby. Pat is survived by Jean - his wife of 57 years, daughters Suzanne, Karin (Ken), Nancy, Britt (Dave), and eight cherished grandchildren; Nick, Lili, Will, Cristina, Ben, Cooper, Max and Lucy. Pat wore many hats during his lifetime, including those of truck driver, freight sales manager, transportation executive and ultimately passing on his transportation systems knowledge as an Operations Management instructor at B.C.I.T. It was his role as a loving family man and loyal friend that he wore with the greatest pride. A gentleman and a truly gentle man; cancer took his life but not his spirit, and he will be greatly missed for his knowledge, good humour and wide-ranging curiosity by all who were fortunate enough to know him. A friend of Bill W., he devoted time speaking to groups of people trying to help them live one day at a time. A celebration of Pat's life will take place on Friday, June 27th at 1:30 p.m. in Centennial Lodge located in Queen's Park, First Street & Third Avenue, New Westminster, B.C. "Do not cry because he is gone - Smile because he was here"

The services for Pat was terrific and I enjoyed meeting Pat's family. Pat was one in a million. I knew him as an instructor in BCIT and a personal friend for the last 21 years. One of my fondest memories of Pat and his love of golf was when I was doing a consulting job, the carrier I was working for had the contract to supply man lifts for the GVCC (Golf tournament). We were given free premier tickets for this event, I guess this is the biggest golf event we hold here in the lower mainland. I went the first day and not being a golfer soon became bored, I had tickets for the following two days of the tournament and I decided that I didn't want to go so I remembered that Pat said he was a golfer so I called him and asked if he wanted the remainder two day tickets. I'll tell you, I've never seen Pat move so quickly to meet me and get those tickets and was he surprised when he found out the tickets gave him on site parking (all of the attendees were forced to park about 7 blocks away) and also he got to rub elbows with the players as the ticket was good for the clubhouse and brunch. I don't remember ever seeing Pat so happy (except when he talked about his family and Grand Kids). I was glad he enjoyed it and I will always have a special spot in my heart for my mentor and good friend. Go with God Pat and enjoy!

I am a mutual friend of Bill W and have known Pat for around 15 years. What a gracious and eloquent man he was ! He always made me feel welcomed and cared for. When he joined my group some years ago I felt as if I had won the lottery ! He always carried himself with such grace and dignity, even when his health was failing - something that I will do my best to emulate. I so enjoyed our talks (usually about golf) before our meetings. I had never met his family until his memorial on the 27th of June and I was so honoured to be in their presence. It is apparent to me that his love for them and his graciousness have had a wonderful impact on them. My thoughts and prayers as well as my gratitude are with his family. God Bless.

I knew Pat from his days in BCIT's Operations Managment Department. He was such a great straight forward no-nonsense fun guy. In a rather argumentative meeting Pat used the phrase " You guys couldn't organize a two-car funeral." in response to a merry-go-round debate. We still use that phrase today and remember Pat when we challenge ourselves to do better. We will miss him but remember.
