Paul Damon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 3, 2024.
Paul R. Damon of Rochester, NY was found deceased unexpectedly at his residence on March 15, 2024. He was 58 years old. He was born at St. Luke's Hospital in Newburgh, NY on 5/11/65 and spent his early growing up years in the Walden and Montgomery, NY area. He moved with his family to Akron, NY in 1979 and completed his schooling there, graduating from Akron Central High School. He went on to work at several different jobs, and moved to Rochester, NY about 16 years ago. Most recently he was employed at the Abundance Food Coop in Rochester, having left that position shortly before his passing. Before that he worked at Lilac Coin Laundry, where he met and bonded with his great friend Alex, who became as close as family to him. Both of these jobs allowed him to meet many people who would become his friends for the rest of his life. Paul was outgoing, loved people, was fun and funny, always sought to be a blessing to everyone he met, was an avid sports fan (Arsenal Football Club, New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox) who enjoyed hanging out with friends to watch and cheer on his teams, and made many true, deep, lasting friendships during his life, all of whom are deeply saddened by his passing. Paul had a genuine faith in Jesus, which gives us who survive his passing the knowledge that he is in heaven as we speak, having been met there by Jesus, and having now been reunited with his departed loved ones. This is our comfort even as we grieve and miss him so terribly.

Paul is survived by his 2 children, Amber Ham of Hampton, VA and Max Nyqvist of Gloversville, NY, and their respective families. He is also survived by his siblings: Pete Damon of Boise, ID, Ruth Spencer of Walden, NY, Martha Risitano of Akron, NY, and Joanna Vanderkooi of Lancaster, NY and their families. Paul is also survived by many close friends whom he dearly loved, too many to list here, because there were many! He was predeceased in death by his parents, Rev. Albert and Mrs. Patricia Damon.

A funeral service of remembrance will be held for Paul at Covenant

United Methodist Church, 1124 Culver Road, Rochester, NY 14609 on Saturday April 20, 2024 at 2:30PM, the Rev. David Wickens (Paul's longtime friend) presiding. Following the service, a reception will be hosted by Paul's landlords at their restaurant (Mr. Goody's Restaurant, 1470 North Clinton Avenue, Rochester, NY 14621) behind which Paul resided, and with whom, along with the owners' daughter Sofie, he was great friends.

Those of us who knew Paul will miss him for the rest of our days, will keep his memory alive, and will forever treasure in our hearts the times that we were blessed to spend with him before he was taken from us (in our opinion) way too soon. Rest in Peace, Paul Damon. We love you!

It was always a treat talking with Paul (aka Fancy Sprinkles) at the co-op. He always went out of his way to interact genuinely with people, and I will miss his sense of humor. Abundance feels like a dimmer place without his bright smile. Thank you Paul for everything. I'm actually gonna try that Jack Abbey you recommended today...rest easy friend.

Paul was always interested and welcoming when I would come in to Abundance. My 14 year old granddaughter knew him through the years he worked at the coop and when I told her about Paul, she and I both cried in sorrow for a kind and funny person who had shown so much care for us. Paul was quirky and quick-witted. He made all kinds of connections while moving us along and getting us checked out. I´m so very sorry for his close friends and family. May he rest in eternal light.

Every single time I went to Abundance and Paul was there, he would always chat, crack a joke, interact in some way. Every single time. He was a bright spot in my day on those days. He truly cared for people, on an individual human level, with no judgment or negative assumptions. That´s so rare. He will be missed.

May his memory be a blessing. I knew Paul from Abundance. The two strongest memories are his smile itself and his sharing stories about his mother who held in such high esteem and love. May the face of kindness he turned to the world linger in memory. Heartfelt condolences to family and friends.

Paul made me laugh. We always enjoyed our conversations we had together. We had met at the lilac laundromat where he was employed at the time and around the area I lived. We would chat about everything and anything he always followed it with a brief laugh. I was happy for him when he left the lilac to work at abundance. At both places he always seemed to be joyful and genuine. I was glad to know him.

I will always remember how Paul always recognized and greeted me at the Abundance Coop. I'm a regular customer there for several years. We always talked about the weather, and shared what we had going on in our week. I'm going to truly miss him! He was gracious, compassionate, and treated everyone with respect.

Paul, I will always remember your smile and the kindness and attentiveness you showed to those around you. I noticed you weren't at the Co-op the last few times I went there, and now the world misses you. You remembered my son and gave me a pumpkin to give him, and you always remembered my name. I was just a casual customer passing through, yet you left your mark. Rest easy, Paul.

My partner and I only knew Paul at Abundance co-op, but we were so lucky to know him. When I first moved to Rochester a couple of years ago, Paul made me feel so welcome and always made time for chit chat. He was quick to give a local tip, make a spot on recommendation (in my case, Opal apples), or tell a funny story. In the event my partner and I walked to the co-op together, and Paul checked us out (usually for apples and chocolate), one of us would turn to the other on the way back and say "Paul is so great. We are so lucky to live in neighborhood where we can walk to buy apples and be with such kind people." The world is a better place because of Paul, and he will very much be missed.

I met Paul (AKA Fancy Sprinkles--made me laugh every time) at Abundance. He was always up for a chat, no matter how he was feeling. He went out of his way to learn my name and how to spell it because I told him once in passing that people rarely got it right. I hadn't realized what an impact he had on me until I saw this news and started crying. Paul, you're leaving a void, and if I feel it this closely, and I barely knew you, I can only imagine what your dear friends and family are feeling right now. I'm going to miss seeing you.

Sending my deepest condolences, especially to Paul´s family. I´m still in shock and can´t stand thinking about all he´s missing here with us... of course I´m heartbroken for so many of us who won´t be interacting with him anymore (he truly knew how to make someone´s day) and those of us who didn´t get to say goodbye. I met Paul at Abundance Co-Op and he ALWAYS went out of his way to be extra helpful.. always a smile for EVERYONE! We would talk about how he was doing since losing his mother last year... he knew (and was a comfort after) I´d lost all my belongings and 2 of my 3 cats in an apt fire last summer. He cheered with me when I was able to eventually find an apartment in my neighborhood again. We spoke of items we really enjoyed at the store and shared ideas for cooking. He had a great sense of humor. I can honestly say I no longer want to go into the store (though I do) knowing he´s not there and I´m just so sad, which must be pretty obvious.
Take care everyone, and may Paul know how special he was to SO MANY people
