Paul Gramuglia Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 26, 2018.
If the words on this page could be shot through with light, or at least scroll gilded in illuminated manuscript, it would feel much more fitting for what it must say. For the child who left this world on Saturday May 26, 2018 was as much light as flesh. After a grace-filled eight and a half years on this earth, Paul Francis Gramuglia left his family, his friends, and his gorgeous red-headed body that didn’t work quite right, and joined his sister Pia and the heavenly hosts in the banquet of our Lord. We will one day rejoice with him. But for now, oh how we wish that Paul could have stayed. And. We know that eight and a half years were about eight and a half years more than his body should have allowed. Born with only a small cat’s meow, Paul needed immediate help to breathe. It would be the first of a lifetime of interventions to make up for what his body did not supply. Paul cheated death many more times than we can count. But the trouble the Ginger Menace preferred was the trouble he could create, which would garner a smile that didn’t quit. Tickling ankles, arms and faces, grabbing and immobilizing busy arms, disrupting medical cares, tossing all manner of objects “everywhere!”, turning on his shows on the TV without permission, disrupting his father’s phone apps, slamming doors over and over, erupting in body-shaking laughter when his father and brother indulged his requests to “bump their heads” and maim themselves Stooge-style, or driving his chair in circles and perhaps a random tree. Trouble, trouble, trouble! Paul’s more peaceful pursuits included memorizing many seasons of Sesame Street, enjoying all manner of ceiling fans, chasing sirens and emergency vehicle lights on long drives, taking long walks, and long “stays” at his stations on Woodland Drive and Avery Street, and Avery Street and Kelly Road watching all the cars and trucks, being deputized to multiple police teams, and enjoying endless waves, beeps, and Hi Paulie! salutations, mostly from hundreds of people his parents didn’t even know. In his Elmo-slippered feet, he was the cherished Orchard Hill/PR Smith sentinel. Paul loved Wapping and Eli Terry Elementary schools, loved the comradery of friends, teachers, aids, administrators, school nursing staff. He loved going to Mass at Saint Margaret Mary, and enjoyed loudly singing the last notes of songs, and hand-signing sacred words out of context to make us laugh, making trouble even in the Lord’s house. Most of all, Paul could not contain his happiness when his requests to go to the homes of his Ma and Grandpa and Nonna and Nonno were affirmed. Life was so good. In heaven, Paul joined his baby sister Pia Faustina and his Nonna, Maria Scalise Gramuglia. No doubt his Nonna is thrilled to be able finally to feed him, gluten be darned. In addition to a huge community who loved him, Paul leaves behind his parents, Frank and Ann, and brothers Luca and Leo, who says, “Paul was a big orange ball of joy in our hearts and without him life is dull and gray.” He also leaves behind his Nonno (Raffaele Gramuglia), Ma (Kathryn Brewster), and Grandpa (Cy Brewster); his zias Rosanna (John) Gramuglia, Anna (David) Pelletier, Linda (Chuck) Engley, Patty Gramuglia, and his zio Tony; his aunts Maureen (Jim) Blanchard, Clare Brewster, Mary (Chad) Buri, Catherine (Rob) Ruscz, Nora (Sean) O’Mahoney, Martha (Chad) Allegro, Lisette (Doug) Frasier, Aloise (Lt. David) Schmitt, and his uncles Cy (Cathy) Brewster and Brent Brewster; and 27 beloved first cousins. We are deeply grateful to the nurses, therapists, and medical teams who made Paul’s life so much better and made it possible for him to live at home with his family; and to Connecticut’s Make-A-Wish Foundation and Shawmut for gifting the wheel-chair accessible Fort Paul in his own backyard. All are welcome to join the family for Paul’s wake on Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 10 - 11:30 a.m. at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor followed by a Funeral Mass at 12 NOON at Saint Margaret Mary Church, 80 Hayes Road, South Windsor. Burial will follow at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield. Please wear happy colors, Paul had no truck with sadness. Rest in trouble and light up the heavens, Paulie G. We all love you so. I've been away for awhile and was heartbroken that my little friend had passed. So many people drove on Avery because we needed all the sunshine he gave and we need to make a permanent memorial to such a wonderful little guy and his spirit! We never know when God will give us such a remarkable star to fill our lives with such beauty. He only gives special children to special families. God bless you!

This has to be the worse!!! I am so sorry for your loss. There aren't any words to express the grief I feel for you and your family. I never had the pleasure to meet your beautiful son Paulie but if he was anything like his mom and dad...he was one great kid! My heart breaks for you and you will forever remain in my prayers. Paul was my student for a short time. He brought so much light and joy when he was in the room. He would show his love by kissing your hand. I remembered his chocolate pudding smiles or his laughter when I made the fire-truck sound. He taught all of us the value of life and gave us hope when we needed it most. God gave him to us for awhile but he is a beacon that will light up our hearts forever. SIP peanut. I shall miss your laugh. Miss Powell.

To the family of Paul.My name is Adan Diaz and I am a driver for WB Mason . I take Avery street on the way back to headquarters everyday and I always got reminded that even as hard as my day was and no matter how tired I was to smile when I would see Paul. I just remember everytime I seen him smile and get excited at the cars going by that I would say to myself God Bless you Kid and also Thank you for the constant reminder that we all should smile more no matter what life brings us. Today when I looked for Paul my heart was broken to see he wasn't there and after I beeped my horn a few times I smiled to myself because I knew he would be. I'll miss you Paul I don't think you had any idea how many people you touched and I will never forget you buddy KEEP SMILING

I absolutely loved driving Paulie. He always had a smile and his shades on. I looked forward to when I would have to go pick him up. Over the last 8 years. Paulie became one of my favorite kids to transport. I would ask his driver for this year, Susan about him all the time. I will miss him. I am glad that GOD gave us the time we had. I am blessed to have known him.

Paulie was my little "ray of sunshine". Whenever I was feeling down he was always there giving me that big smile that would melt my heart. I will always cherish our memories and the times that we were together. My heart is broken, I was planning to visit in July while in CT. I will continue to pray for the family. I will always love you Paulie G. Heaven has gained an Angel.

I didn't know your beautiful boy, but I had a special child of my own. They teach us more about really living in their short lives, than most people do living 10 times as long . I carry that with me every day. I can tell by your special tribute , you already know that. I'm sure my Stevie met him at the pearly gates and they are discussing why it takes most people so long to figure out how to REALLY enjoy life!!??

Paul, you had such a glowing spirit that spread around you daily. My son Joseph enjoyed being in class with you for two years at Wapping. He remembers learning sign language there to communicate with you more. He will miss you and we all will miss your smile.

My son & I just waved to you last week, it was a joy to see you loving outside. This seems so unreal. You brought light to our corners. It was always fun to see your joy too. I know you are playing with the angels & are running free. We'll miss you. Yes our lives are a little more grey, I agree.**hugs**

Dear Gramuglia Family,
My heartfelt condolences go out to you at this time. I heard a lot about Paul from his dad -- especially about the joy he found in his Make a Wish backyard playhouse. He sounded like such a special little guy. Frank always had a smile on his face when talking about him. My heart goes out to you.
