Paul Swain Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 13, 2008.
SWAIN, PAUL STEVENS, 96, beloved husband and father, died peacefully January 5, 2008 in Louisville, KY, where he was raised and educated. Born September 24, 1911 in New Albany, IN, he was a talented musician who began his career in 1927. As a top alto sax player in the 1930s and 40s, he played with such great swing bands as Paul Whiteman, Benny Goodman, Scat Davis and Teddy Powell. In 1939, he married Alice G. Rennenberg of Louisville and moved to New York City, where, after serving in World War II, he worked as an arranger in hit radio and television programs, including Ed Sullivan's Toast of the Town and the Jackie Gleason Show. He later arranged for Broadway shows and wrote arrangements for early pop records. In his latter years he returned to performing, working professionally through September 2007. Predeceased by his wife in 2002, he is survived by his daughters, Charlotte Hoare, of Blandon, PA, Susan Swain of Portland, ME and Mary Ellen Adams of Louisville; his son, John Swain of Newberry, SC; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A memorial service and inurnment will be held in the spring in Louisville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Musicians Emergency Resource Foundation, 751 Spicewood Dr., Clarksville, IN

To Paul's Family,

I will always remember Paul's gentle smile, his easy manner, and unassuming way. I always enjoyed my time with him. I was very lucky to have known him and luckier still to have played some of his music. He was a joy to be around.

I had the privilege of being onstage with Mr. Swain several times, as recently as November, 2007, as he made guest appearances with a local 17-piece big band. At age 96, he could still put us younger players to shame! His musicianship was amazing and his spirit was indominable. Mary, you and the rest of your family have my sympathy.

Mr. Swain,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served during WW II and for being a member of the Greatest Generation. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
