MENDUK, Pauline (nee Hluska)
October 21, 1911 – March 31, 2018
It is with great sadness that the family of Pauline announces her passing at the age of 106 years at Edson, Alberta. Pauline is survived by her son Jack (Suzanne) of St. Albert, daughter Pauline Lubarsky of Edson, sister Josephine Bealle of Red Deer, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Louis; sons Tom, John, and Bill; daughter Elsie; granddaughter Robin McNeil; son-in-law Bill Lubarsky, brother Walter Hluska; sisters Rose Martel and Elsa Wittenberg.
Pauline had the challenge of coming from the Ukraine at the age of 11 in 1922 to Coalspur, Alberta to learn a new language. At the age of 16 she was married and started raising a family in the Coal Branch area in the wilds of Alberta where there was no vehicle access. She lived nearly 40 years on the Coal Branch and liked to share her fond memories of this time of her life. She enjoyed exercise and working hard around the home and often said that is why she lived so long. In her later years she lived in Edson where she became an avid reader and hockey fan and enjoyed working in her yard and garden and keeping a clean house.
The family would like to thank Dr. Sarah Smith of the Edson Hospital and the staff at the Edson Continuing Care Centre for their compassionate care.
A funeral service for Pauline will be held April 9, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Westlawn Funeral Home, 16310 Stony Plain Road, Edmonton.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Pauline may be made to Edson Continuing Care, 3825 6 Avenue, Edson, Alberta T7E 0C5 or a charity of one's choice.
