Peter BURGENER Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Dec. 1 to Dec. 2, 2014.

BURGENER, Peter G.
May 18, 1950 - Toronto, Ontario
November 29, 2014 - Calgary, Alberta
Peter, beloved husband of Shannon, passed away peacefully at the age of 64 years, after a valiant battle with cancer. Peter's rich and adventurous life began in Toronto, where he graduated from the University of Toronto's Architecture program. In 1978, Peter launched his own architectural practice in Calgary, which, over the course of the last three and a half decades, grew into one of the leading architectural firms in Western Canada, evolving into BKDI in 1994. At the age of 21, Peter married Jocelyn, and together they would raise four children, instilling them with the gifts of art, culture and community engagement their parents valued so greatly. Peter was predeceased by his mother, Elinor, and will be lovingly remembered by daughter Sam (Scott, and sons Alec and Henry); Matt (Amanda, and daughter Nora), and John, all of Calgary; and David (Mayumi, and daughter Mitsuki) of Brisbane, Australia. Peter is survived by his father, John, and brothers Paul (Suzanne) and John (Rebecca) and sister Deborah (Jeffrey). Peter lived by the wisdom that one should be responsible for, and responsive to, one's community, and never lost sight of ways in which he could give back to the city he has called home for over 36 years. He was a key participant in councils and committees from all levels of public education, health care, government, the architectural profession, the arts, church and his local neighbourhood community. He served as a member of the Board and Building Committee of the Calgary District Hospital Group, the Calgary Planning Commission, and the Calgary Development Appeal Board; as Senator of the University of Calgary, President of the Alberta Association of Architects, President of the Catholic Family Service Agency; and as a board member of Calgary Opera and Honorary Patron of the Alberta College of Art and Design, to name a few. In addition to the many local roles Peter played, he also served as a Governor of the University of Toronto and was a board member of the National Capital Commission in Ottawa. Peter's tireless commitment to the development of a rich and vibrant city led to his professional contributions to Calgary's architectural landscape, including the Glenmore Landing Shopping Centre, the Canterra Tower, renovations to St. Mary's Cathedral, and the Arriva Tower. BKDI was a longtime sponsor of the GMC Rangeland Derby, and Peter served as the Calgary Stampede's Master Plan Consultant, contributing to the vision for the Stampede's Youth Campus. Peter instilled a team spirit in his staff and colleagues, leading his firm to contribute to many not-for-profit organizations, including the Alberta Children's Hospital, Calgary Homeless Foundation, the Alberta Cancer Society, Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta, the Mustard Seed, Theatre Calgary, the United Way, and many others. Peter loved sailing, travelling, and painting, and was a beginning member of the Calgary Polo Club. His energy, enthusiasm and integrity will be missed by his family, friends, and the many people whose lives he touched in so many ways. A celebration of Peter's life will be held at St. Mary's Cathedral (219-18th Ave S.W.) on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be directed to the Peter Burgener Memorial Fund, c/o The Calgary Foundation, 700, 999 8 - Street SW, Calgary, AB T2R 1J5 www.thecalgaryfoundation.org. In living memory of Peter Burgener, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

I met Peter on a plane when he was coming back from his final trip to France with his wife. We shared an amazing 2.5 hours of 'life talk' where the most important topics were covered. Life, relationships and legacy were laced between funny stories and serious lessons. It was as if we had been friends for years, yet because we weren't it afforded us the opportunity to talk honestly and in the moment. I am sadden to hear of Peter's passing and want to extend my condolences to his family.

I only recently found out that Peter had battled cancer. I was deeply saddened by his passing. It has been several years since I last saw him but I have so many fond memories. I remember lovely times playing the guitar and "celebrating family" as our children went through high school together. My heart goes out to all of his incredible children who continue to make a mark in the world. I send a special hug to Jocelyn and to his children. You are sadly missed Peter. You left your footprint in the hearts and minds of many.

Rest in Peace Dear Peter
The tide recedes but leaves behind
bright seashells on the sand.
The sun goes down, but gentle
warmth still lingers on the land.
The music stops, and yet it echoes
on in sweet refrains...
For every joy that passes,
something beautiful remains.

Peter's family: I want you to know that when I would meet a new Permanent Resident Canadian who had Architural skills from their Country of Origin in their different employment situations I have done in Calgary, I could count on Peter to take time to talk and advise these new Canadians as to their options in his industry. Also, some of my children grew up with the Burgener children and enjoyed the fun creations in their home.I have always been grateful for those memories. Blessings to Peter. Ann Marie Wilson

When I first came to Calgary, I worked at Burgener Lachapelle Architects. It was tough times but great times. Peter devoted his life to a great urban existence.

Shannon:
Marg and I send our deepest condolences. As you know, Peter came into our lives just a few years ago. He was special; a gifted urbanist who could capture the essence of an idea in a few precise words. I saw that capacity many times at the NCC advisory committee meetings.
We had developed a friendship that was too quickly taken away.
Our love and prayers to you and your family. Dave and Marg Witty

I was privileged to work in the same industry as Peter (planning applications). While that was just a portion of his professional capacity and of his very busy life, it still gave me a glimpse of Peter's sharp intellect and common sense.

I suspect, given the tributes already made, that we will start to get a more complete picture of Peter.

My condolences to Peter's children, Shannon and her children, to Jocelyn and to Peter's extended family.

I will fondly remember his wish to vote in the Calgary Elbow by-election and the opportunity it gave me to reconnect with Peter once last time.

Happy trails Peter.

Sincerely,

Peter was a truly unique and special man. He loved life to its fullest, never settled for mediocrity, and always had an answer to everything. His panache was first evidenced within his marriage to Jocelyn. Together they raised four talented children, who were well intertwined with the five children in our family. We had the pleasure of knowing Peter through both business and personal initiatives over a span of 32 years. He was always intent on doing his best in whatever he tackled, and there was no situation which intimidated him or his numerous qualities.

That wonderful smile and special laugh will never be forgotten – nor the twinkle in his eye for the many people and situations he shared enthusiasm for. The City of Calgary was indeed fortunate for all his contributions which shaped the very core of our city, as well as the time he devoted to all of the non-monetary causes which supported so many people. He will be dearly missed by all his family and those who had the pleasure of knowing him and his accomplishments.
