Peter Findlay Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 28, 2011.
FINDLAY, Peter Charles Peacefully at home in the Glebe on May 21 in his 76th year. Predeceased by his parents William Fraser Findlay and Anna Catherine Findlay of Carleton Place, Peter will be greatly missed by his beloved partner Susan Brady, his sons John Fraser Findlay (Carol Liu) and Peter Douglas Findlay (Frances Zimmerman) of Toronto and his grandchildren Audrey, Georgia and Giran. He will also be missed by his brother William R. Findlay (Betty Ann Findlay), Catherine Fraser (John A. Fraser), and Jean Gauthier (Rene Gauthier); his extended family of nieces and nephews; and his former wife Sue Findlay. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario and Washington University, Peter found his passion for working on issues of social justice during his work for the CCF government in Saskatchewan. He went on to work as Secretary of the influential Bilingualism and Biculturalism Commission, before beginning a career at Carleton University, first as assistant to President Davidson Dunton, then as the acting director of the Graduate School of Social Work. For the next two decades he was an important fixture as a professor at the school while taking sabbaticals and work/study trips in France, Sri Lanka, Nicaragua, and Zimbabwe. He was also a founding board member and past-President of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives as well chair of the Great Canadian Theatre Company. Seven years ago he was diagnosed with dementia and Parkinson, but he was able to follow his wish of spending his last years and days in the comfort and familiarity of his own home. A man of many sides, with a wicked sense of humour and the charm to match, he will be greatly missed.

Peter had a house on Melgund in the Glebe, and I was one of his "roommates". I was an impecunious graduate student at the time and his assistance was deeply appreciated. Peter possessed that very Canadian trait of poking holes in pretense, and was particularly impatient with snobbism of any kind. He was unfailingly gracious and generous, and kind to a fault to his colocs, as we say in Quebec. Rather than living in comfortable privacy he chose to share his house with us, and his explanation for that choice was that he was overhoused. He was a person who didn't just talk a good line, he applied it in his private and public lives, supporting and promoting many humanitarian and egalitarian causes. A great raconteur and very funny, I also recall him talking about the Findlay Stove Works, and going for spins in Davey Dunton's convertible. He was proud of the work he did on the Bilingualism and Biculturalism Commission with Dunton, and rightfully so. There was something very special about Peter-jaunty and well turned out, he was a prince of a guy. I am so sorry he is gone. He was a great Canadian, in the true sense of patriot and humanist.

I met Peter almost 30 years ago, as I began my studies at the School of Social Work. He was my professor and supervised my Independent Enquiry Project. He later became a friend.

From all my memories, what stands out the most was a quiet conversation we had in 1986, shortly after my father died. I don't remember his words, but do remember his kindness, empathy, and caring as we talked. In many ways, Peter seemed larger than life to me - but it was his humanity that I will not forget.
