Peter Weller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2007.
Peter W. Weller Actor, passed away at his home in Mill Valley on Monday, September 24, 2007 of a heart attack. He was 75 years old. Mr. Weller, who was born in the East End of London, England, began his acting career at the age of 5, appearing on the stage dancing his heart away. He continued on the stage appearing in amateur and professional productions in and around London before joining The British Royal Air Force at the age of 20. While serving in the Royal Air Force, he became a member of the entertainment unit and performed before the troops throughout South East Asia. In 1958, Mr. Weller immigrated to the Unites States. He spent three years in New York City working for Sabena Airlines before moving to California in 1961 to work for Qantas Airlines in their public relations department. Once in San Francisco, Mr. Weller resumed his acting career appearing with various bay area theater companies. He appeared in many productions at The Ross Valley Players and joined the Lamplighters of San Francisco, where he appeared in numerous productions including both productions of My Fair Lady, Hello Dolly, La Perichole, The Pirates of Penzance and his all-time favorite role, the solicitor in Patience. Some of his other favorite roles were in Separate Tables and Absurd Person Singular. He last appeared in Franz Lehar's The Merry Widow as Pritschitch this past February. During a sojourn in San Diego, Peter joined the Old Town Opera House and played melodrama for a season at the State Park in Old Town. Besides playing the evil landlord, he sang and danced in an 1890's Gilded Age Revue. One of his greatest joys was his home in Sausalito, where he spent many hours tending his garden and enjoying his bay view. His second love was traveling and seeing the world. As a raconteur, he provided his friends, family and dinner mates with many hours of laughter and joy. Peter is survived by his partner of 30 years, Tom Edwards; his sister Joan; brother, Sam and nephews, Richard and Gordon. Private Services will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2007, in Mill Valley at the Fernwood Funeral Home with a Celebration of his Life to be held later. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lamplighters of San Francisco.

I knew Peter from "our Qantas days" in San Francisco and I was shocked and saddened to hear the news, despite not seeing him for years. Peter always made me laugh - a great gift; and Peter was always a thoughtful and very kind man.

I'm so sorry to hear. Peter was always so nice and fun to be around. We was a welcomed and appreciated member of the Phoenix family. Our little globe could sure use a few million more Peter Wellers.

Godspeed Peter.
