Philip Muscarello, Sr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 23, 2009.

Phil was one of a kind....a devoted and loving husband, an adoring father, grand father, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew and the best friend anyone could possibly have.  Anyone who knew him will certainly experience a huge void in their life.

We will make it through this very difficult time through the strength that the Lord has given us and with all of our wonderful memories of Phil.

Thank you, Lord, for blessing us with the company of such a powerful and positive figure in our lives and giant of a man for 77 years.

Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Monday, May 25, was from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting resumes at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 26, from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Mass and funeral service at St. Thomas More Catholic Church at noon. Burial in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Phil was chosen All-City and All-State while playing high school football at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge. He attended Mississippi Southern and played three years of varsity football as center. He was chosen All Gulf Coast Conference in 1951 and played in the Sun Bowl in 1953. His accolades included being chosen to play in the 1955 Hula Bowl, he was selected as the Chevron Lineman of the Week, was awarded the Breithard Athletic Foundation Award in 1951 and several other athletic achievements. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953-1955. Phil retired from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Louisiana after 30 years as senior vice president of marketing. Phil loved to cook for his family and friends. He specialized in Italian and wild game cuisine. His favorite all time unique recipe was his Phil's World Famous Deer Sauce Piquant. Phil was known by all for his entertaining stories most often shared at "The Patio." Phil loved his family, his friends and loved life. He touched the lives of many and will be missed tremendously by all.

An estimated 1,000 people attended Phil's visitation on Memorial Day , Monday, May 25th and Tuesday morning.  A funeral Mass was held at St. Thomas More Church.  Father Tom delivered a beautiful homily and personal letters were read from Mamie, Toni, Joni, Phil and Sammy.  Special song choices were Amazing Grace, Ava Maria and The Battle Hymn of the Republic.  Thank you to Michael Wayne Noto for helping to organize our 2 vocalists, DeShay  & Paul, also Jeff on trumpet.  Phil's burial at Greenoaks Memorial Cemetary was led by Father Tom and then an honorary military service began with active and retired members of the Marine Corp.  Two Marines met the hearst Daddy was carried in and slowly saluted him in the most precise and impecible method  have ever seen.  Taps was played perfectly and the American flag was folded and then presented to mom as she was asked if she would accept it "on behalf of the President of the United States of America in memory of our fallen warrior".  It was the most powerful thing I've ever seen in my life.  I know Daddy was so proud and we were too.  It was amazing and uplifting.

Thinking of Dad tonight and enjoying the beautiful website my creative sister, Joni designed. I avoid viewing very often due to the sadness I feel every time. It doesn't get any easier, but I feel close to Dad whenever I do visit the site. Dad, I love and miss you every day. BTW, I could sure use your advice and guidance to get me thru "Obamacare". I know you would be on top of it and could help me with the parts of it I'm struggling with. Love, your #1 daughter, Toni Ann

To My Very Special Family,

Even though the years separate us, you have all been in my heart.
I have warm memories of my Uncle Phil. As a child , I remember his great spaghetti sauce. The BBQ ribs, cooked on a 55 gallon drum grill.
He always made me laugh. He made us happy.
My heart felt condolences.

Love,

A tremendous man and a tremendous loss to many many friends and family. Mr. Phil had a way to make you feel like you were the most important person in the world. He was a true character and will be missed by me and many many others. Best wishes to Mamie, Toni and Joni - a great husband, dad and friend to many. He will be greatly missed.

Phil,

I never had the pleasure of knowing your dad, but judging by the product (you), he was obviously a great father. You were very lucky to have had him for so long. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

By the way, "Green Green Grass of Home" was one of my dad's favorites, too.

I am shocked and very much thinking of y'all. My heart, and a big hug, goes out to y'all. I can still see Mr. Phil now...always smiling...serving me a muffletta at y'all's Italian booth at the STM fair...lighting up your home and everywhere he goes with his presence...saying something to guarantee a chuckle...being nothing less than a uniquely kind, very special person.
Love and prayers always,
Gina

I ALWAYS NOTICE YOUR DAD HAD A BIG SMILE ON HIS FACE WHEN HE WOULD LOOK AT SOME ONE. THAT MADE ME AND ANYONE ELSE FEEL HOW FRIENDLY HE WAS TO SEE THEM. MAY HE SHOW THIS TO OUR GOD AND MAY GOD SMILE BACK AND BLESS HIM.

Phil Jr, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Please call me if there is anything I can do to help. Your dad was the first person I worked with when I started with Ameritas on September 11th, 2001. He has been so wonderful and great to work with over the years and I know you're going to miss him so much. Take care and take time.

Our deepest sympathy to you and to your wonderful family. Marie and Anthony Noto are special friends of ours, and they have dearly loved Phil through the years. Marie thinks of him more as a brother than as a cousin. We are thinking of you with prayers in our hearts as we trust God with you to lead you through these sad days. May you find comfort and help in the knowledge that you are so very precious to many people...May God's presence be especially evident and close to you as He shares the help, hope and encouragement that each of you needs.
