Phillip ACEVEDO Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 11, 2021.
ACEVEDO, Phillip "Phil" 33, of St. Petersburg passed away in his sleep at home on August 8, 2021. Born and raised in New York City he graduated from St. Francis Preparatory High School where he earned three varsity letters in football, track and field, and swimming winning CHSAA championships in football and swimming while captaining the swim team. After High School he applied to and was accepted by the very competitive City College of New York seven-year combined BS/MD program where he finished his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science and the first two years of his medical education receiving high honors. He continued the last two years of his medical education and graduated from the Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY. He interned at Winthrop University Hospital before starting his residency at Temple University Hospital/Moss Rehab Hospital PM&R residency program in 2013 later relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida to work in an Interventional Pain and Regenerative Medicine practice after completing his fellowship in Pain Medicine at Northeastern Rehabilitation Associates in Bethlehem, PA. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ismael and Aurea Acevedo; Kenneth and Winnifred West. Phil is survived by his parents, Frank and Margaret Acevedo; brother, Dominick Acevedo; uncles, Cesar Acevedo, David West, Gilbert West, Roldan Colon, Philip Sladek, Kevin McKusker, Rodney Moore, Peter Ornes, Kenneth and Mark Hicks; aunts, Beverly Smith, Camille Colon, Judy McGaw, Maria Acevedo, Nicole Moore, Rosie Ornes, Kathy Mckusker; and a host of cousins too numerous to name. Phil was a very independent, resourceful and loving individual whose smile would light up any room and person he entered or met. He was the first to look for adventure in all aspects of life and avidly participated in ocean swims, and every imaginable physical activity and competition he could find. His support and encouragement for all of his friends and family was what made him special. He loved music and dance, read avidly, learned something new every day, cherished animals especially his dog Leroy, was magical around children, and above all loved his family who he spoke with every day. In addition to all of his activities and friends Phil was a gifted physician who had a passion for relieving the pain and suffering of others. As a physician he delivered the highest quality care to his patients and taught other physicians the gifts of his talents in interventional pain procedures. He always offered his love and genuine persona to all he met and his captivating smile, kind words, and unique laugh all served to mesmerize all he met and will for always define his kind and true spirit. Phil's visitation will be Thursday, August 12, 2021, from 5-7 pm at Anderson McQueen Funeral Home- NE St. Petersburg, and his New York services are yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the St. Francis Preparatory Football Program in Fresh Meadows, New York or to the CUNY School of Medicine - The City College of New York. I am so very sad to learn of the passing of Dr Phil. My condolences to his family, friends, and fellow patients. He was the best doctor I have had and he was able to treat my sciatic pain without doing a major invasive surgeries (unlike others had told me I needed). And as others have commented, he was a really kind and nice man, loved animals, and funny. The world lost a shining star. RIP Dr Phil. I will miss you.

I was saddened by the passing of Dr. Acevedo today at my 2 week followup. He was truly the only Dr that cared about his patients. I've only known Phil for a short time, but its like I've known him forever. He was very compassionate and truly wanted to help you be pain free. Phil you will truly be missed!! I hope the other drs can help me as much as you were helping me. My condolences to his friends and family. Rest easy Dr. A

This month was supposed to be a last surgery for me done by dr Ace as he tried many never giving up an he said I would have an ohh shoot moment when I wake up an feel no pain he used another word then shoot an we laughed that is the type of dr we all want in our lives i will never forget how he has helped me he will always have a place in my heart and I will truly never forget him all other doctors at florida pain have very big shoes to fill

I´ll never forget the first time I met Dr. Acevedo, right before my first procedure with him. I had been fine and expectant of everything and then all of a sudden all of this anxiety hit me like a ton of bricks and I began to have a panic attack. He held my hand and told me the breathe. A few weeks later I returned, and he completed the next step and changed my life. I never got to thank this man for all he did to change my life. He gave me back the quality of life that I had lost, and the ability to do things that I hadn´t in quite a few years. I was looking forward to the end of August to tell him of all the things I had been able to accomplish all because he was willing to take a chance on me. In may of this year, I had experienced some serious symptoms that he was concerned about and if it wasn´t for his care and concern as a doctor, and also accessibility to his patients, I could´ve continued to suffer from something that was extremely serious. I am beyond grateful and blessed to have met Dr. Acevedo. I´m honored to have shared laughs and had these moments with a healthcare provider that restored faith that compassionate, caring people really do exist. Thank you for all you´ve done, you will be greatly missed. May you rest easy.

To all those who worked alongside him, his family and all those who loved him, my sincerest condolences. I pray you continue to hold your memories close and dear to your heart forever and they soon bring you comfort and peace.

For Dr. Philip Acevedo
I Leave You
As moonlight leaves
the waters face,
As winds forsake the fragile willows
Brief embrace.
I leave you
As autumn sun melts into gold,
With all the things,
You meant to say,
Still untold.

Phil had a light around him, a inner glow, that made him stand out from the rest . He was my Dr. and I like to think of him as a friend. We would talk about us both being from New York, how different Florida is. I've never had another Dr. that was filled with empathy for his patients, before Dr. Acevedo. I used to tease him, that if I was 20 years younger... Watch out!!! He would throw his head back and laugh. I will be sending prayers for him and his family, genuine deep prayers. I lost a daughter years ago too, and all I can say, is that grief is as pure as this. I'm so sorry for your loss.

In a world that we try to make sense out of - sometimes, there just is no logic - there is only clarity with the recognition that we don´t know His plan.
Words won´t work.
Rest in Peace Phillip Francis Acevedo
