Polly Joan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 23 to Sep. 24, 2022.
Polly Joan, an incredible woman, Mom, Grandma, wife, artist, counselor and writer passed peacefully from this earthly shell Wednesday evening, August 10th at her home with family in Ithaca N.Y. She is survived by her husband Charlie Zekoll, her three children: Chris (Susan) Gibbons, Gary (Lisa) Gibbons and Julie (Ralph) Kinscheck and four grand Children: Matthew, Mark, Caleb and Hannah Polly and her first husband Paul (Diane) Gibbons and brother-in-law David Hawkins and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Polly was predeceased in 2021 by her beloved sister Judy Griswold (David).

Polly was born in Columbus, OH to Alice Lersch and Courtland Griswold, but grew up in Dayton. Polly earned her BA in sociology from Oberlin College in Ohio, class of 1955. This is where she met and married her first husband, Paul, in 1954. Polly moved to Bronxville, NY for Paul to go to Yale Divinity school and where Polly gave birth to her sons Chris and Gary. Upon graduation, the family moved to Ithaca NY because Paul took a job as a Cornell University Chaplin. It was there that Polly had her daughter Julie. They were married for 25 years during which time Polly also received her Master's in English from Cornell University.

Polly was active in the social movements of the 1960's, often participating in demonstrations and actions in support of women's Rights, Civil Rights and the Peace Movement during the Vietnam war. In the early 1970's they formed a commune in Enfield, NY called Dandelion Hill.

Polly was recently retired from over 25 years as a well-respected photographer and leader at the Ithaca Farmer's Market. Her photography brought light and beauty into the homes and offices of countless people in Ithaca and far beyond. In an earlier career Polly developed a program to help youth at risk while working at Suicide Prevention and authored the important book, Preventing Teenage Suicide: The Living Alternative Handbook (c.1986). She also published a book of her own poetry: No Apologies (c.1975) and co-authored the book A Guide to Women's Publishing (c.1978). Finally, she wrote a book called Turning 60 to share her life story with her loved ones. She also taught creative writing in the public schools and was an adjunct English Professor at Tompkins Cortland Community College.

Polly married her second husband, Charlie Zekoll in 1986, with whom she shared love and life for 36 years. They met at a nightclub while coincidentally, dancing to the music of her sons' band. Charlie was an expert marksman and archer who navigated the woods with great skill. Polly shared countless hours with him in the wilderness, enjoying nature, and shooting photos. He even got her interested in hunting! Early on, Polly worked for the Divi Corporation which afforded opportunities to travel together to beautiful island places and inspired her photo shoots in her spare time. On one of these island trips, Charlie tells how they even won a dance contest together! It was shortly after leaving Divi that she launched Polly Joan Photography, her final and most well-known career that lasted until age 87!

Polly will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

There will be a celebration of life service held at 2:00pm on Dec. 29, 2022 at the

I didn't know Polly, but someone gave me copies of two of the hymns whose lyrics she wrote. I liked them, and I'm sorry I never go to know them or her while she was alive. She sounds like a remarkable person.

Mom lived to decorate for every season! Little figurines, place mats, colored bottles and candles- and flowers! Always flowers!

Dear Julie - I only just realized Polly had passed when I saw a mention on Facebook of your having just celebrated her life. We are both so sorry, but of course glad to have known her, and all your family, since 1974. The poem about her mother, "Little Alice from Amherst, Ohio," which I set to music, premiered by Katie Gottschalk, recorded by Helene Williams, is in the American Music Center Library catalog, the recordings of which are unfortunately inaccessible due to a technical glitch I keep hoping they will fix. Our deepest condolences - Leonard (& Helene Williams Spierman) Lehrman

Polly was my Junior Counselor at Oberlin College when I was 17 year old freshman. I was 500 miles from home and was used to being the top of my class academically. Polly was caring and sympathetic when I was homesick and had to cope with the first "D" grade I had ever seen. She and Paul were a couple we underclassmen looked up to as being the "perfect couple". In recent years Polly and I renewed our relationship at the Farmers Market in Ithaca when I visited my daughter who lives there. She was a " force to contend with" in all ways and I shall miss seeing her in her stall with her photographs. My sympathy to her family. She will be much missed.

I have so many fond memories of the good times we shared back in the 1980's. So much fun at parties, dancing, a trip to Barbados, hunting, and hanging out!

But what I'll always remember most about Polly is her unending sense of empathy and compassion for others. Our teamwork to prevent teen suicides in local high schools was super successful in large part because Polly knew how to lead the program and convey to school administrators the importance of this work. And this was almost 35 years ago! Talk about being a pioneer!

That's Polly. Pushing the envelope to create a better world. Rest well Polly. Your good works are a legacy to be proud of.

And to Charlie and Polly's entire family, I wish you comfort resting in the amazing life you have been privileged to share with your dear wife, mother. and grandmother.

What a beautiful woman. The world lost a very special, kind-hearted soul when you took your last breath. You will be truly missed by many. My last memory of Polly was at 6mile creek watching her son play. She was a blessing to see and to be able to talk to her one last time. One of those moments in life where you wish you just stayed a little longer.

I have fond memories of your mom. I can vividly picture Erin, Julie and I in the kitchen of your Connecticut Hill home the morning after a sleep over and Polly playing Joni Mitchell. As she went in and out of the kitchen, she was amused and interested in our teenager-ness. Then later when she worked for suicide prevention and we did that video. She was a good listener and I felt really comfortable being myself with her. Her eyes had a way of twinkling and her photography reflected her love and connection with the natural world. I´m grateful for knowing her and knowing how she was a remarkable woman, I´m sure she will be missed by many. My heartfelt condolences.
