It was with deep regret and sadness that I read of the passing of Ray. He helped the McMurray family several times over the years in a variety of jobs. He was a great neighbor, and he will be missed. May God bless you and your family in this time of sadness, and we will rejoice in the comfort knowing we will see him again some day soon.

Very sorry for your loss. But I know he is in heaven resting now. We will pray
for the family. I remember Ray helping my dad build his house he also helped me wire mine. People just don't help like they use to, that was the good old days. Any thing you needed done he was more than happy to help. He will be missed dearly.

Ray passed away Wednesday morning, long time friend and neighbor. He was 87. He retired several years ago from Eastman and I have known him since 1974 when I went from the Labor Gang/high pressure crew, to Trucking department.
I helped him rewire my house. Every time I look at the breaker box or flip a light switch I think of Ray. I have done this for several years before his passing. I remember going to his church and helping him hang a new door, Fishing with him on South Holston Lake in his boat, and him teaching me a new way to catch Crappie.
I remember him laughing when he was catching Huge Slab Crappie on his side of the boat, and all I could get was Bluegill on the other! (we even changed sides of the boat with same results. He even let me use his rig and I still caught Bluegill)
I told him next time we would take my boat!
He had an infectious laugh that made you want to laugh at yourself! These little (seemingly insignificant) things seem to pop out after someone passes. Gods way of remembering someone I suppose. Makes you wonder what memories we will leave behind when we pass? Good or Bad?
I hope mine are good.
P.S. Ray, when you read this, Say howdy to my Dad and save us a seat.

I am sorry for the Byrd family in their loss of a great Christian husband/father/grandfather. While looking through the photo gallery I see that he was loved by many and no doubt left behind a great testimony. I am sure heaven has gained another angel and one day he will be waiting on his family with open arms.

Papaw was a good man who loved God and did his best to serve the Lord. Yesterday when me and dad were thinking over the arrangements that had just been made, I asked dad if anyone ever confirmed a poem or verse for the memorial cards. I wanted to find something special for papaw's card, something that had meaning. I picked up his tattered Scofield Bible and flipped through it's worn pages. Many verses were underlined and highlighted by papaw's own hands. The binding of that precious book was separating from it's pages and many of the pages were torn and falling out. That in itself was a tribute to my papaw. A well worn Bible says something about it's owner. Do I select something traditional such as 23rd Psalms? John 3:16? The Lord's Prayer? As I flipped through the pages, the blank front page opened up. Written in papaw's own hand was his name and the date 1965 and on the opposite page a copy of a poem taped squarely in the middle. How appropriate this poem was and to have it affixed to the book papaw loved the most. How could we not use it? It was as if papaw himself had chosen it, or maybe the Lord....either way as I read it, I was comforted and new this would be the perfect selection.
When I am Old
When wistful eyes have grown too dim
To trace the far horizon's rim,
And dull ears seldom catch the words,
Of loved ones, never heard the birds-
Lord grant me this; though flesh shall fail
And music cease and beauty pale,
Withdraw not Thy supporting arm,
But still Thy miracles perform!
As fail the things of sense and flesh,
Creator, fashion me afresh
From Thine eternal loveliness
And clothe me with Thy righteousness!
When thee my busy hands grow still,
How sweet to rest within Thy will!
When shadows cloud my earthly sight,
Still glows for me Thy kindly light.
What though my ears hear not the birds?
Ah, lovelier far Thy whispered words!
Lord, all my sunset hours are sweet
When they are spent at Thy dear feet!
