RAY MANLEY Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 17, 2024.
RAY E MANLEY, born on March 8, 1940, in San Jose, California, passed away on June 25, 2024, at the age of 84, in Redding, California. A man of humor and heart, Ray enriched the lives of those around him with his wit and dedication to family and community.

Ray graduated from Point Loma High School in San Diego in 1958 and furthered his education at Ohio State. He joined the Marine Corps, serving from 1958 to 1962, where he embraced the discipline and camaraderie that would later influence his civilian life.

Professionally, Ray was a skilled sheet metal worker and later became a Teacher and Training Coordinator for Sheet Metal Workers Local 104 Training Fund in San Francisco and the North Bay. In his retirement, he continued to serve his community as a First Responder with the Old Station Volunteer Fire Department for 11 years, providing medical aid and fire protection..

An avid fly fisher, Ray spent many joyful years fishing and camping across the country with his beloved wife, Joann Moore. His love for fly-tying and travel was only surpassed by his devotion to his family and friends. Ray was also a respected 43-year Friend of Bill W., actively contributing to the recovery community.

Ray is survived by his daughters, Michelle Manley Everson (Greg), Coryn Lake (Zack), and Kimberly Manley Quebada (Eugene); son, William Michael Manley (Kate); step-daughter, Stephanie Manley Freeman (Rob); step-son Mike Pezzillo (Savannah Day); and numerous cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Annie Ruth Manley; sister, Dona White; brother, Jim Colclough; and former wives, Kathy Manley and Carole Chenitz-Manley.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring to honor Ray's legacy. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Old Station Volunteer Fire Company or the Nature Conservancy, supporting causes close to Ray's heart. His life was a testament to the power of humor, service, and unconditional love.

Ray always made me laugh. Even in the most stressful of times and situations. He was a great man to know and be around.

Ray gave back to his community through his service in the Shasta County Fire Department. He made a difference in that community protecting it from the many fires that threatened Old Station

You will be missed.

I have known "my little sis" Joann for most of my life <3 I was just was getting to know Ray and my one regret was that I had not gotten to know him sooner.
He was wonderful and funny and he adored his Joann. Being in their presence was always peaceful and easy. Love you Jo <3

I've lost one of my best friends and my sobriety mentor. That Marine had a heart of gold and really helped me when I was down. His wisdom and friendship will not be easily replaced.

Ray and I made numerous trips to Eureka. I was the Rep and he was the training coordinator. We talked of family, friends, sheet metal and things we love doing or going to do. After stopping at a curio store that had carved bears, he said he wanted to do that, carve a bear with a chainsaw.
I asked him what he possibly do with all that sawdust. He looked at me strangely and then burst out laughing. A joke between us for many years after. I'll miss you my friend.

Ray and his beautiful wife Joann, became our dearest friends while we resided in Old Station. Our Besties from forever have become their besties now also.

We shared many times at JJ´s having breakfast, lunch or dinners and shared life stories and laughter.

He recruited my hubby JB to join the Vol Fire Department, they shared many hours saving life´s and grew to be Great friends!

Our dog Harley loved spending overnight time with them and felt right at home snuggled under the blankets with them.

He will be loved and remembered always, and Joann will always be inn our thoughts and prayers.

Forever and always, Rest Easy Rayman,

The Beckers

Ray and I shared a love of Fly fishing and he took me to one of his local spots, where I caught the largest rainbow trout I have ever seen. It was an amazing experience and Ray made it happen. Ray also shared his fishing knowledge with his grandson, Sean, giving him a great trout fishing experience, his first brook trout!

Sad when I hear of Ray Passing. Ray got me to join the volunteer fire department in OS, taught me a lot and became good friends thereafter. I remember Ray as funny but took the fire department job seriously, always willing to what was best for the volunteer, and always willing to help the community. Rest in peace Ray.
