Remmey Bumsted Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2008.
BUMSTED R. Remmey Bumsted IV Musician, chef, son and brother, of Madison, 23 R. Remmey Bumsted IV, 23, of Madison died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, from a previously undiagnosed congenital heart defect. A wake will be held in honor of Remmey at Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main St., Madison, on Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Vincent Martyr Church, 26 Green Village Road, Madison, on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 11 a.m., followed by a celebration of Remmeys extraordinary life at Morris Country Golf Club, Convent Station. Remmey was an extraordinary son, brother, uncle, musician, chef and friend. He was truly a modern day Renaissance man whose love of music, cooking and adventure led him from his hometown of Madison to the restaurant kitchens of Shelter Island, N.Y., where he spent his summers, and then on to Chicago as a chef at the renowned Bin 36 Restaurant. An avid and highly accomplished guitarist, Remmey played professionally at several Chicago blues clubs. In the fall of 2007, he returned to his family and friends in New Jersey to pursue a degree in music and music production, and was enrolled in classes at the time of his death. As a friend and confidant, Remmey knew no equal. He possessed an intellect and compassion which belied his years, and he left an enduring impression on everyone fortunate enough to have met him. His unique and boundless capacity for love and his indomitable spirit will continue to serve as an inspiration to his family and friends. Remmey was a 2002 graduate of Morristown Beard School in Morristown, where he was president of the Student Body and captain of both the football and lacrosse teams, winning the Alden C. Hess Award for leadership in lacrosse in his senior year. He attended Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pa., and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Remmey is survived by his parents, Roy R. and Patricia P. Bumsted of Shelter Island, N.Y., and Bonita Springs, Fla.; his sisters, Allison of Milford, Mass., and Kate of New York City; his brother, Bryan of Pembroke, Bermuda, for whom he was best man at his November 2007 wedding; his grandmother, Anne H. Bumsted, a longtime resident of Short Hills, and his nephew, Liam. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Save The Music Foundation, Remmey Bumsted Fund, 1633 Broadway, 11th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10019 or NBIMC Foundation, Congenital Heart Disease Program, 201 Lyons Ave., Newark, N.J. 07112.

I was the peer group teacher when Remy was a peer group leader at Morristown-Beard. He came to the retreat with a broken leg. He climbed trees and did all the other physical as well as mental activities all with great good humor and gusto. It was an honor to know him, watch him learn, watch him give to others and bask in the warmth of that amazing smile. I am so very sorry for your loss.
