Rex Bell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 15 to Jul. 17, 2011.
REX BELL Rex A. Bell Jr., 76, retired Clark County District Attorney, of Las Vegas, passed away from cancer July 8, 2011. He was born Dec. 16, 1934, in Santa Monica, Calif., to Rex Bell, cowboy actor and two-term lieutenant governor of Nevada, and Clara Bow, the original "It" Girl of silent film fame. Rex and his brother, George, were raised on the Walking Box Ranch near Searchlight. He attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated from the University of Nevada at Reno, then received his law degree from Williamette University in Salem, Ore. After serving as a deputy district attorney in Pendleton, Ore., Rex joined the district attorney's office in Las Vegas under George Franklin and then Roy Woofter and was legal advisor to the Clark County sheriff and Las Vegas Police Department, which merged in 1973. Six years later, newly-elected Clark County District Attorney Bob Miller hired Rex as his assistant district attorney. After two terms in this capacity, Rex ran for district attorney, won, then was re-elected for a second term. Upon his retirement from public service in 1994, Rex returned to his cowboy roots thanks to Michael Gaughan, who appointed him as Gold Coast Hotel representative for the National Finals Rodeo. Rex also opened his own law firm, assisted by longtime secretary and friend Marlene Luna. He continued to practice until illness overtook him. Rex epitomized all that is good about "the good old boys," treating everyone with decency, honesty and respect. If he felt someone deserved a break and he could help get it, he did. His door was always open, and although you might not get out as fast as you thought -- Rex was a natural-born conversationalist -- you were sure to leave with at least one good story. A gifted athlete and avid sports fan, Rex played basketball, football (from Notre Dame's varsity team to the annual Las Vegas Police/Firefighter match at age 55), softball, racquetball and golf. For the past two decades, he bowled in the Lawman's League in season and the Nevada Power League each summer. He was especially proud of coaching the women's Police Olympic softball team, which competed in Australia in 1988 and came home with the gold medal. Rex treasured his friendships, maintaining contact with classmates from Las Vegas High School, Elsinore Military Academy, college (he still hosted the annual send-off of Las Vegas students to Notre Dame), and law school, as well as fellow members of the National District Attorney's Association, and his many other interests and activities. He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy; brother, George; son, Michael Bell; daughter, Michelle Bell-McKinney (Michael); stepchildren, Jolene Culver, Shawn Wellington and Marc Bever; and three granddaughters of whom he was extremely proud, Nicole Rosenblum, Brittany Bell and Brooke Bell. Additionally, he leaves behind extended family members and innumerable friends from all walks of life who are sure to miss his friendly greeting and everpresent smile. There will be celebration of life noon-3 p.m. Saturday, July 23, at the South Point Hotel - Sonoma Conference Rooms A and B, 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Donations can be made to Standing Tall, c/o Fr. John Smyth, 1100 N. River Road, Des Plaines, IL 60016; Flagstaff Mission to the Navajo's, P.O. Box AA, Flagstaff, AZ 86002; Salvation Army, P.O. It's hard to believe that it's been slighty over 7 months since Rex Junior died of cancer on July 8 of last year(2011). It's a shame that I never got a chance to meet him, so that I could talk to him about his mother, Clara Bow. From what I gather, he seemed like a nice fella, and, a good person to know. Rest in peace, Rex Jr. =)

Rex and I worked together when I was director of the forensic laboratory. He was a true gentleman of the west, a class act and a good friend. We are all better because of him, and less because of his absence.

My sympathy goes out to Rex's family and friends. My dad (Charlie Shelton) and Rex's dad were friends. Rex Sr. was so good to us when we first moved to Las Vegas in 1954. He acted as a mentor to Daddy when he first went into business..in competition with Rex Bells on Fremont. We were on the Strip.
I met Rex JR. years later and found him to be so like his Dad and such a nice man. Though we hadn't been in contact for years I feel his loss. Las Vegas doesn't shine quite as brightly with him gone.

I knew Rex from the DA's office. I will always remember what Rex did for me. He was a great friend and wonderful person. He was such a great guy! I will truly miss him. Godspeed Rex. I will always remember you. God bless.

As a resident of Searchlight during the days of the active Walking Box, I knew his folks better than I knew Rex, but as he became DA I had occasion to bring him pictures I'd had for years of his family. What a nice guy! He never changed from his early years. Donna Andress

I first met Rex at Boy Scout camp in about 1946, and then became reacquainted while working for the District Attorney in 1978. Besides being a good friend, what I admired and appreciated about him most was his integrity. He appointed me County Counsel and I worked closely with him for 6 years, during which time he always backed the decisions of the Civil Section in spite of political pressure to do otherwise. No one who knew Rex could ever say that there weren't honest and straightforward politicians. Regardless of his position and upbringing, he was a great friend and down to earth.

It was a wonderful memorial service for Rex and I was very happy I came in from Los Angeles. I went to visit Clara today, it was her birthday and I know Rex always had flowers there for her, but I brought some for her. I hope maybe Kathy, if you see this you can email me to say hi. It was good seeing you last week again!

Tony was a childhood friend ... we lived in the West Charleston area where he still lived! They lived in one house, then left for a time, returned and lived in another just up the street from us on Goldring. We were friends ever since ... attended UNR together also. He will truly be missed - one of the all around nicest gentleman you would ever want to know. Catherine Blackman Hammelrath

Rex was a wonderful man. I met him when I interviewed him about his life growing up in southern Nevada. We became friends and he was one of our supporters of Las Vegas history. He always found a few minutes in his day to talk. I will miss him very much. Lynn

A most difficult experience is losing the ones we love. We ask, ”Who now will teach me as you did? Who now will love me unconditionally as you did? Who now will heal this void from losing you?” Our answers may not be immediate apparent nor may we even be satisfied with such answers.

Rex, I personally learned many valuable lessons from you over these past several years. Today is a celebration of your life, thus we celebrate a great man who did many great things for us, helped this city and this community at large.

Even though you never demanded repayment, today is our promise to you. Those you have helped, those you have influenced, and those you have sacrificed for, we promise to live the life of a good person -- we will enjoy every minute and live life to the fullest, we will care for our fellow brothers and sisters, and we will do the right thing. This promise indicates that the world needed Rex Bell, Jr. and that your life was well served.

We love you, forever.

I met Mr. Bell on two occasions when he shared his memories of growing up in Nevada (including at the Walking Box Ranch) with those of us at Friends of Classic Las Vegas. I admired his mother as an actress, and I think she and her husband (Rex Bell Sr.) must have instilled some very special traits in their son, who seems to have had no enemies. RIP, Rex Bell Jr. (Tony)

Dear Mr. Bell, I've been a fan of your mothers since the mid-1990s. She was such a wonderful actress. I wish I would have had the opportunity to meet you and talk to you about your famous mother. Unfortunately, that is now not possible due to your passing, but, at least now you are together with both your mother and father. Rest in peace, Mr. Bell. =)

Rex was a special man, a great boss, and a kind friend. I will be forever grateful for his trust and confidence and will always remember him with fondness. He called me on the telephone just a few weeks ago to catch up, and we talked for close to an hour. Thanks for that Rex -- you will be missed.

I was a friend of Rex's through my interest in his mother Clara Bow. He welcomed me into his home in the late 1980's and we had a wonderful afternoon as he remembered and shared the life of his mother with me. He will be missed as I know Las Vegas has lost a good friend.

SO SILENT WAS YOUR LEAVING
by Robert M. H. Zirbel

So silent was your leaving,
Not a sound to say goodbye,
Just a silence that you left behind
And that silence seemed to say
“Please, please…
Do not grieve…
For I just had to go.”

So silent was your leaving,
Uttering not a painful cry
Nor even a fearful moan.
And that silence seemed to say
“Please, please…
Do not grieve…
For I just had to go.”

That silence is still not shattered
Even though my tears pour down
To join with all the unsaid words…
Those special, special words…
That I had always meant to say.

If I had cried out “Please, please do not go.”
Would you have stayed?
No, I think not
For you had been called…
And you knew you had to go.
Yes, you knew you had to go.

Rex was a very good man and everyone will miss him but he is looking down from up there smiling and putting in a good word for us I am sure.

I remember Rex as part of my professional life from 1976 to 2002. He was always smiling, cordial, and listened with the intensity that he lived. He will be sorely missed as one of the true "old Vegas gentlemen".

I had the pleasure to know and play with both Rex (Tony) and George when we were very young children. His parents Rex and Clara would bring the boys to Elsa Dunbar our neighbor who acted as their 'nanny' or baby sitter when they were out of town. My only claim to fame is that I was kissed by Clara Bow! They were both great kids. Rex and I were contemporaries at LVHS. I saw Rex many years later and he never forgot me...truly amazing that after so many years had passed he remembered our days of playing 'cowboys and indians together. He was a staunch Las Vegan like his father and will be sadly missed. He was the real fiber of what this town used to be in the 'good ole days.' I wish his family well and send my sincere condolences at his passing. Sadly, I will be unable to attend the memorial service as I would love to meet all of his family. He was a great person reflecting the quality of his own parents Rex Bell,sr and Clara Bow. God Love Him Always! Rest in Peace Rex, 'ya done good kid!'

Rex Bell, a big reason for the success of the Nevada Police and Fire Games, as a legal advisor, softball coordinator and a participent, for the many great trips to AZ to bowl, the Lawmen's bowling league (won't be the same) to be part of your last round of golf, and to say goodbye at your bedside, Thank you Lord for bringing Rex into my life. I love you Rex and you will be missed

I first met Rex in the late 1950s. I feel fortunate both to have known him for over 50 years and for the opportunity to say my good byes to him last week at his bedside. He was a great Nevadan and a distinguished member of our community. Rex was very proud of both of his parents and their accomplishments, but he didn't coast on their coattails or live in their shadows. Instead, he made his own mark in his own way and in his own time, becoming the well respected and accomplished member of our community for which he will be remembered. Rex, Go Irish and rest in peace. John
