Rhonda Denise Fletcher, age 62, of Gary, IN, departed this life on January 21, 2022, in Bowling Green, KY, after a bout of cancer. The first daughter of James E. and Erceil Crouston-Fletcher, Rhonda's birth made July 25, 1959, the best day of the year for the Fletcher household in Gary, IN. After graduating a year early from Roosevelt High School in 1976, she enrolled in Purdue University. She was later called to law enforcement and, after training at the Police Academy, was sworn in as an officer of the Gary Police Department in 1984, a job she enjoyed in the 1980s and '90s. After ending her career in this capacity, she worked at the United States Postal Service for twenty years and retired in 2009. Rhonda spent her retirement celebrating the milestones of her children and other relatives and getting to know her grandchildren. She loved crocheting scarves and blankets, bowling, putting pineapple in baked beans, rib tips, and trying to be the first person to call you on your birthday. Rhonda showed her sons what it meant to work hard, no matter the circumstances, obstacles, hindrances, or hurdles. Rhonda was not afraid of hard work or giving her last to her children and will be remembered fondly and reverently for the early life lessons she taught them. Rhonda was preceded in death by her father, James E. Fletcher, and mother, Erceil C. Fletcher; sister, Deborah R. Fletcher; two grandmothers, Deolous Crawley and Rose Mason; two grandfathers, Randall Crouston and Charlie Fletcher; aunts, Ocell A. Crouston and Sadie Lee Dowdell; and uncle, Sir Charles Fletcher. She is survived by her brother, Zimmie Williams; sons, Steven E. S. (Ileabeth) Fletcher, James Bogard, Randall Bogard, and Tyshaun Bogard; dear cousins, Steven and Gloria Ross, Talisa Ross and Akilah Ross, 7 granddaughters, 1 grandson and many beloved relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 5, 2022, 11:00 a.m. at Smith, Bizzell, Warner & Son, 4209 Grant St., Gary. www.smithbizzellwarnerfuneralhome.com
