Richard Doherty Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 1, 2018.
Richard Edward Doherty, age 72, passed away at his home in Miami, surrounded by his family, on October 29, 2018, after a long and fiercely fought battle with cancer. He was born in Easton, Pennsylvania to John and Ruth (Wooten) Doherty. He was a graduate of Notre Dame High School, and served honorably in the United States Air Force for four years. He obtained his bachelor's degree, from Temple University, and his law degree from the University of Akron. Richard settled in Miami to start his 44 year-long distinguished career as an exceptional trial attorney. Richard's special interests and hobbies included a passion for tennis, boating, skiing, and traveling with his wife, Michaela, as well as following college and professional football and basketball. Some of his favorite times were spent out on his boat aptly named "Sea Trial", with his "First Mate", Michaela. Richard always was a positive "glass half-full" person, and met life's challenges with confidence and optimism. He is survived by his beloved wife of 22 years, Michaela, his sisters Joan, Janet and Donna, and many nieces and nephews. Memorial arrangements will be private.

To Richard's Family: Please pardon my delay in sharing my deep felt condolences for the passing of Richard. Richard and I both practiced law in Miami for many years and in fact worked in the same law firm but at different times. For many years I commuted from my home in Broward County to downtown Miami where I had an office and would run into Richard from time to time. Always a smile, a pleasant hello from my friend and colleague and a sharp dresser. I can attest that tennis was his passion as he often talked about it. Richard was one of those rare lawyers who carved out a legal practice with the dignity and kindness befitting a solo practitioner. My office moved to Dadeland several years ago and so my visits to downtown sadly came to an end. I am truly sorry that I did not have an opportunity to see my friend in his hour of need. God bless Richard and his family. A fine guy with a good heart has been lost. RIP my friend.

So sorry to hear of Richie's passing. I hadn't seen him since we moved to Naples, but always thought he was a great guy. I never had the pleasure of meeting Michaela, but he always spoke of her when I was at his office for a deposition. I know he adored his sisters and my heart goes out to you. Please let me know if there's anything I can do for you.

So sorry to hear of Richard's passing. I enjoyed playing tennis with him, and running into him occasionally since we worked in the same office building for a while.

We cannot describe how we feel at this time knowing that Rich is gone.

Life is not fair! Here's a man who always took care of himself, with a very successful career, a beautiful smart wife with whom he spent many happy moments, enjoying his tennis, boating, traveling...and he is no longer with us.

We admired Rich because he was very honest, naïve sometimes and always extremely clever and sharp both on the tennis court and in the court of law, where he continually managed to excel.

We will miss him dearly and for Michaela and the rest of his beautiful family, we want you to know that all our thoughts are with you at this very sad and heartbreaking moment.
