Richard Eamer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 4 to Jun. 5, 2016.
February 13, 1928 - May 2, 2016 Richard K. Eamer passed away on May 2, 2016 at the age of 88 having lived a life he embraced to the fullest. His family and friends are forever enriched by his enduring commitment to the happiness of others. Richard was born Feb. 13, 1928 in Long Beach, California to Lillian Newell and George Eamer. He grew up in a Los Angeles that he loved. A jack-of-all-trades, Richard enjoyed being lumberyard hand, truck driver, and western writer in his early years. It was while at Glendale Community College that he met future wife Eileen Laughlin, whom he was married to for 62 years. Richard earned degrees in Accounting and Law from University of Southern California and forged a place in society which reflected his serious allegiance to education and hard work. In 1969, Richard co-founded National Medical Enterprises Inc. with lifelong friends John Bedrosian and Leonard Cohen. NME, now named Tenet Healthcare, became one of the nation's largest healthcare companies. Richard was also the driving force behind the concept of what would be the USC University Hospital, now USC Keck Medical Center. In addition to a lifetime of other significant achievements, Richard co-founded the John Douglas French Foundation for Alzheimer Research and was Chairman of EPIC Hearing Healthcare. Richard loved all animals and had a horse farm he named Mandysland for a beloved Labrador. He was an avid supporter of animal welfare organizations and often personally adopted troubled dogs which he rehabilitated with loving kindness. Whether referring to people or animals, Richard lived his motto of "be happy and help others to be happy." Richard is survived by children Brian Eamer and Erin Knowles, daughter-in-law Julie Eamer, son-in-law Richard Knowles, and grandchildren Holly Fuhrman, Jordan Eamer, Travis Heuer, Garrett Eamer, Audrey Eamer, step grandchildren Sean Knowles, Samantha Knowles, Charley Knowles, Brandon Archilla, and grandson-in-law Michael Fuhrman. A memorial service honoring Richard's life will be held at noon on Saturday, July 9th at Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church. Reception to follow in church hall. In lieu of flowers, a donation could be made to the animal welfare charity of your choice.

I worked for Mr. Eamer in 1991 and 1992, at the NME building on Colorado Avenue in the City of Santa Monica California, I was at the bottom of the totem of the NME organization working as a security officer back then, But Mr. Eamer made no distinctions and greeted me and my co-workers with a good morning "How are you doing" always displaying a frank smile and an approachable disposition...May The Lord receive you in his arms dear boss.

My condolences to Brian and Missy. I have fond memories working for Mr. Eamer as his assistant in the 80's. He taught me many things that I still refer to today. His love of animals was one of his most admirable qualities along with his humor. He treated me as one of his family. Rest in peace Mr. E!

Richard K. Eamer was an amazing human being. He loved to meet and talk to people. He enjoyed the time he took to listen to their stories. He believed in doing good to others, I could say that was his religion and he practiced every day.

He touched the life of so many, including mine. At the age of eighteen he took me under his wing and gave me the opportunity to go to college. He put me through a private college, not once but twice, never doubted me, or anyone else he ever helped. In the last ten years of his life I spent a lot of time around him and learned so much more about his person. He was always kind, generous and humble to people and dogs. Did i mentioned he LOVED dogs. Mr. Eamer and dogs connected at a whole different level. He was always happy, full of life and eager to work. I remember him always telling me, " Nancy, the key to a happy life is to do what makes you happy," and so I did. I finished college and married to a wonderful man with whom I have two beautiful boys. Mr. Eamer is my inspiration to live life to the fullest and to enjoy my family every moment that passes. As nurse, today I truly hope i can live up to his legacy of being kind to others, specially when they most need it.

Richard K. Eamer you will always be loved and remembered,

I had the privilege and pleasure of working with R.K. Eamer --an amazing, funny, and principled man for a few years after his "retirement," a time when he chose to help incubate startups in business areas he cared about. He explained his decision to come out of retirement this way: "When the grandkids run away and say, 'Oh, no. Here's comes grandpa again,' you know it is time to find more to do with your life." So lucky he made that decision! So grateful to have known him.
