Richard Roth Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 16, 2022.
Richard Roth Jr., FAIA

Richard Roth Jr. died peacefully in his sleep on October 13, 2022. He was 89 years old. He leaves behind his daughter Robyn Roth-Moise (David), four grandchildren, Lauren Machinist (James), Samantha Steinbrecher (John), Mason Roth (Samantha Singh) and Emily Roth, as well as two great-grandsons, Henry and Benjamin Machinist, along with daughter-in-law Eleanore Roth and brother Emery Roth II (Jane). He was pre-deceased by his wife Alene and son Richard Lee Roth.

Richard Roth Jr graduated from the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, followed by Miami University in Ohio for his architecture degree. He became chief architect, of renowned New York firm Emery Roth & Sons in the early 1970's and CEO in the early 1980's. Like his father, Richard Roth Sr. and grandfather, Emery Roth before him, Richard combined a flair for design with commercial savvy to run a successful architecture practice. Over his 40-plus-year career, the multi-award-winning architect designed hundreds of buildings for clients in NYC, in New York State, across America and around the world. Most notably he worked on the Pan Am building, the World Trade Center, Citicorp, 55 Water Street, 17 State Street, the Palace Hotel, the Park Lane Hotel, the original 7 World Trade Center and the General Motors building in New York City, to name just a few. Richard, who was a fellow of the AIA, was awarded in 1993 the James William Kideney Gold Medal award from the New York State American Institute of Architects.

Richard was fortunate enough to combine his thirst for travel, his love of art, music and photography with his work around the world. While retired, he enjoyed giving talks to various organizations, including Untapped New York, Pan Am Museum and the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, to name a few. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Central Park Conservancy, Skyscraper Museum, Untapped New York, as well as Landmark West in NYC.

Dear Robyn, I have so many memories of Richard and of course Alene. He was a wonderful host and friend, a lot of fun and we always felt like family, whether we were in New York, France or London. He made good use of the internet to keep in touch over the years and I will miss the ootzard messages. Love to you all, Cathy Knapp and family.

My sincerest condolences to you the entire Roth family.
Richard and Alene were the best host while living in Grand Bahama.
They opened their home to us for many functions.
They shared so much to so many, including their vegetable garden.

I worked for Richard Jr in his office as head of the design department in the early 1980's. I kept in touch with him on social media over the years and always found him to indeed be a person with ethical culture and a host of other great qualities. Emery Roth and Sons was one of the most prominent and prolific architectural firms during most of the 20th century while being led by three generations of Roths.

I had the honour of knowing your father and mother when we all lived in Freeport. They were wonderful people, who loved good conversation and debate, good food, and just generally loved people. Richard, may you travel well in the universe! We shall miss your spirit.

Dear Robyn and the Roth family,
It is with a heavy heart that I pen this note to give my condolences on the passing of your father.
It was in Freeport Bahamas where we met and founded a partnership, his love for architecture and the arts will be with me forever.
On behalf of my family and all the employees of my firm and consultants
Have our deepest sympathy.

I was blessed with inheriting the job of computer and audio support for Richard after his son passed away. He was a remarkable storyteller and a great listener as well. He left his imprint on New York City and me as well. I will miss him.

To Robyn and her family -

I was very saddened to learn of your dad´s passing. He was fortunate to have 89 good years and to have died peacefully in his sleep. Although I never met him in person, I feel that I got to know him through his wonderful Untapped NY presentations. I have really enjoyed getting to know him and you via Untapped NY. May he rest in peace and may fond memories of him be of comfort to you and all of his family.

Richard was a wonderful father, husband, grandfather and friend. I was welcomed into his home and family many years ago, and happily stayed. It gives me comfort to think of him with Alene now. We will miss him greatly, but every time the NY skyline comes into view he will be lovingly remembered. Sending much love to the Roth-Moise, Machinist and Steinbrecher families. Love and condolences from the Weisfeld family.
