Now Heaven's Handyman, Richard (Rick) Sartor, age 78 of Las Vegas NV, lost his battle with Alzheimer's Disease on March 11, 2022.
The Sartor family mourns the passing of Richard John Sartor, known to many as Rick, who died peacefully on March 11, 2022 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. To his family, he was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who was an example of what it means to be a model citizen and a profoundly decent man. To many in the community, he was an inspiring role model, trusted advisor, and loyal friend. His sincerity, humor, approachability, and thoughtfulness won him many admirers.
Rick married early to the love of his life, Sue, who was by his side at the end. Together they built a family, first in California then in Michigan where he worked for Consumers Power for over 30 years. Able to enjoy an early retirement, Rick and Sue left Michigan for the warmth of Las Vegas where he could do what made him happy: tinker and fix. Alzheimer's was particularly challenging for a man who seemed to always find a solution to any problem. For years Rick was able to research at the library, find a friend who could help him learn, or just "try it out" and see what happened. The modern ability to "Google it" amazed and delighted him, and elevated his belief that one can learn how to do almost anything with a little effort, the right resources, and a sense of adventure (a supportive partner helps too).
In his characteristically humble way, Rick never saw his actions as anything special—simply the right thing to do—though the community is filled with people who were changed for the better because of his involvement.
Rick is preceded in death by his parents, Attilio and Margaret Sartor, his oldest brother Gino (Doreen) Sartor and his daughter-in-law Carolyn. He leaves a legacy of love in his wife of 58 years, Sue, his children Nick (Jennifer), Gina, Cara (Chuck), his grandchildren Keegan and Anna, his brother Evie (Barbara), and his six nieces and seven nephews.
While we can no longer "quick, call Rick", his legacy will live on when we solve a problem big or small with the help of friends, reference books and the internet.
There will be a memorial mass at Our Lady of Las Vegas at 11am on April 11 with a reception to follow at the church hall. Rick will be interred at Palm Cemetery Northwest in Las Vegas with a private dedication ceremony at the columbarium.
We are comforted to know that Rick Sartor knows Rick Sartor again.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Rick's honor to the charity of your choice or the Keep Memory Alive campaign of the Lou Ruvo Center.
