Richard Stout Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 22, 2018.
Dr. Richard H. Stout, (Dick), 79, died Saturday, September 22, 2018, surrounded by his family at the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center in Nashville. Born in Murray on October 29, 1938, Dick was an extraordinarily kind and generous man who loved life and radiated positive energy. He loved and lived his favorite motto, Carpe Diem. On August 7, 1960, Dick married Lynn Hahs, daughter of the late Dr. Robert W. and Elizabeth McNeill Hahs. An accomplished athlete, Dick graduated from Murray High School in 1956, and is a member of the Football Hall of Fame, Baseball Hall of Fame, and All Sports Hall of Fame for the Tigers. He received his B.A. from Murray State in 1960, where he played both varsity football for the Racers and baseball for the 'Breds all four years. He was a member of the Sigma Chi and Phi Chi Fraternities. In 2000, he was inducted into the Murray State Racer Hall of Fame in recognition of his contribution to those teams. Dick was well known for his boundless enthusiasm for the Racers and dedicated much of his time to supporting athletes, coaches and fellow fans. He was instrumental in founding the MSU Booster Club and served as president for many years. Of his many contributions to Racer Football, Dick was particularly proud to have instigated the tradition of "Racer One" circling the track after every Racer score. Dick was a compassionate physician who earned his M.D. degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1964. He performed his pediatric residency at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis, at Baptist Memorial and John Gaston Hospitals from 1964-1967, followed by a pediatric allergy fellowship under Dr. Lloyd Crawford at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, University of Tennessee, Memphis, from 1967-68. He entered the U.S. Army in the fall of 1968 and completed his allergy training at the University of Washington, Seattle, while stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA. He returned to Murray with his family in 1970 where he joined the Murray-Calloway County Hospital staff and began his practice as a pediatric allergist at the Houston-McDevitt Clinic. He later founded the Allergy Clinic of West Kentucky, where he served generations of patients throughout the area for forty-five years until his retirement. Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Carl M. Sr. and Elizabeth Covington Stout, and his sister, Beverly Stout Garland. He is survived by his brother, Carl M. Stout (Carolyn), his wife of 58 years, Lynn Hahs Stout, daughter Elizabeth Stout Paulsen (Rick), and sons, Robert Stout (Debbie), Richard Stout (Kate), and Danny Lee Stout Johnson. He is also survived by his eight loving grandchildren, Covington and Blaire Paulsen, Cartter, William and McNeill Stout, and Reed, Malone and Whit Stout. Visitation will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Murray on Saturday, Sept 29th, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to the ALS Foundation, Kentucky Chapter, 8640 Haines Drive, Suite F, Florence, Kentucky 41042, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105 – 9959, the Murray State University, % Racer Club Unrestricted, CFSB Ticket Office, 1401 State Route 121 North, Murray, Kentucky 42071 or the First United Methodist Church, 503 Maple Street, Murray, Kentucky 42071. To Mrs. Lynn Stout and entire family, There are not words that we can say that will take the pain away but we know that in time the memories of Dr. Stout will bring smiles to your faces. We were given the opportunity to get to meet and know you both and we will always have a fond memory of the time we spent when the snow storm had you stuck in New York. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you during these difficult days. If there is anything we can do to help during this time, please do not hesitate to call on us.

Dr. Stout had a greater than life persona that permeated everything he touched. His contagious smile and playful wit served as constant reminders never to take life too seriously. He had a tremendous impact on my life, both personally and professionally, inspiring me not only to become a physician but also to become a better man. My deepest sympathies to the entire family for your loss.

Dr. Stout was an amazing man. He was so caring to everyone, but especially to children. My girls loved him so. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. He was such an avid MSU Fan and loved the Blue and Gold, we will definitely miss seeing him cheer our Racers to victory! He's in a better place and no longer in pain. He will forever be in your hearts.

Dick was a good friend and helped me when I was in school at Murray State. Murray and Murray State University had no better friend than Dr. Stout. He always wanted Murray State to succeed in every way especially in sports. An all around good guy that I will miss. I'm sure he is having a fun reunion with Ed and Dog right now.
