Richard Varney Sturtevant, known affectionately as Juss, passed away on August 15, 2024, in Mansfield, MA at the age of 99. Born in Needham, MA on February 27, 1925, he was a lifelong resident of Massachusetts and a pillar in his community.

Juss bravely served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946, dedicating himself to his country during a critical time. After his military service, he embarked on a notable career in business. He was Vice President of the Sturtevant Company from 1947 until 1972, and later served as Vice President of Traffic & Distribution Services from 1973 until his retirement in 1995.

An alumnus of Needham High School and the University of Maine, Juss valued education and often spoke of how it paved the way for his successful career. His hobbies included hunting, golfing, skiing, gardening, sailing, and playing bridge, each of which reflected his love for life and active engagement with the world around him.

Juss was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucile Farnham Sturtevant; his mother, Rita Varney Sturtevant; his father, Justus Hatch Sturtevant; and sisters Elinor Boynton, Clare Glotfelty, and Justine Dinneen. Juss was my dad's (Bob Cook) best friend. We grew up skiing and sailing with the Sturtevant family and the Benton's. When sailing we'd play cards with Juss and he'd always win. He taught me how to chart a course, steer a sailboat and even how to cook bacon (he always cooked the best bacon). I think of him every time I cook bacon and get distracted. I still say to myself, "oh Juss wouldn't have liked that", when I don't follow his method. He was a very smart man and he and my dad always had a good time hanging out together. They are sorely missed!

I played bridge with

Juss for many years, He was a great player, and I invited him to play in a regional tournament in Mansfield. We played on a Sunday and had a great game. I know he enjoyed this day, Paul Butler
