Richard Colin Zaparanick of Madison, passed away unexpectedly on August 17, 2017. He was born on April 21, 1943 in Newark New Jersey, the son of Joseph and Lillian Dowling Zaparanick.

He graduated from Westfield High School in New Jersey in 1962. Richard graduated from Peru State College with a B.S. in History and Education. He then earned a Master's degree in History from West Virginia University. In 1972 he moved to Madison Connecticut.

Richard spent most of his working life as a house painter. He also worked in a machine shop, did some substitute teaching and was for a time the owner of Poor Richard's Book Store in Madison, CT. He enjoyed helping construct and paint sets for local high school dramas, the Nutmeg Players and Sisters of Mercy. Richard loved the beach and the ocean, visiting East Wharf most days. He helped neighbors and friends, keeping a watchful eye on houses and pets.

Richard leaves two brothers, David Zaparanick of Dawson Springs, KY, and Robert Zaparanick of Denver CO., and a sister Sharon Zaparanick Davies of Avon, CT. He is also survived by six nieces and nephews, Dr. Tracy Zaparanick, of Okinawa, Japan, David M. Zaparanick of Atlanta, GA., Michele Zaparanick- Brown of Versailles, Ky., Carl Zaparanick of Wethersfield, CT., Robert Davies of Avon, CT., and Kimberly Wiemeyer of Duxbury, MA.

Richard also leaves so many friends from his beloved town of Madison. He cared for so many and we are grateful to know it was returned.

A funeral mass is planned at St. George Catholic Church in Guilford, CT. on October 7, 2017 at 10AM with a reception to follow at the church. Friends are invited to attend and share remembrances about Richard.

Zap was always there to help in so many ways with the Nutmeg Players ....painting,putting sets together or taking them apart

He would always take cast photos and next day he would be at the theater with them all developed and available to all...amazing...a really nice guy...

A good friend and Neighbor. Zap was always there when I needed his help: be it carrying patients and riding as a third for Madison Ambulance; making emergency painting repairs on my home; or helping care and photograph my aging elderly parents and God Mother - Edna.
Zap will be deeply missed by my Yorkies and I.
Rest in Peace my dear friend. Our lives were much richer because of your presence.

I'll fondly remember my years on Lawson Drive with Richard and his parents as neighbors. He was always kind, caring and helpful. He was considerate and would always ask about my children. There were the hot summer days when he would walk down the street with his sunfish sailing gear including life jacket, rudder, center board etc. Always had the best flower garden on the street. Sail on to calm seas Richard.

Richard was the first neighborhood friend when I moved to Madison, he truly was a kind and caring man. We spent many days and nights on the beach benches solving all the worlds problems. I will miss him terribly

Richard first worked for us. Then he became a dear friend. Every Sunday afternoon for 20 years he and I have sat together in our living room watching sports and talking politics. Sundays will never be the same.
