Robert Alvey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 8, 2016.
Robert "Bob" Lee Alvey Sr.

Robert "Bob" Lee Alvey Sr., 77, of Laguna Niguel, passed away Sunday, October 2, 2016 at Mission Hospital, Mission Viejo.

Bob was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Kempis Lee Alvey Jr. and Verna Izora Alvey June 13, 1939. At the age of 10, his family moved to California. He graduated from Leuzinger High School in Lawndale, CA. While working at Marineland of the Pacific, he met his future wife, Ann Louise DiMeglio, and they were married August 20, 1960 in San Pedro, CA. He graduated from Long Beach State University and worked as an account and assistant controller for Southern California Gas Company/Pacific Lighting Corporation for 24 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army and Army Reserves. In 1988, he accomplished what only a special few golfers do by making a hole-in-one. After his mother's death in 1995, he developed a passion for genealogy and was published in 3 issues of "Kentucky Ancestors" in 2003, chronicling the Alvey ancestry in America beginning in 1657. Additionally, he was a contributor to the book "The Buckman Family of Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri, USA." He was also an avid gardener, wine enthusiast and collector of unique cacti and succulents.

Bob is survived by his wife Ann Alvey; Daughter Dawn (Mike) Hansen, Lake Forest; Son Robb (Elissa) Alvey, Orlando, Florida; Brothers Earl (Bobbie) Alvey, Las Vegas, NV and Gary (Marci) Alvey, Healdsburg, CA; Sister Carol Oberg, Chino, CA; Grandchildren: Brad (Fayth) Hansen; Bethany Alvey; Kevin Hansen; Dallas Alvey; Abby Hansen; Rebecca and Christopher Alvey; Kristen Alvey; Great-Grandchild Eli Hansen and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 10:30am Tuesday October 11, 2016 at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, San Pedro followed by a graveside service at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes. Sign guestbook at dailybreeze.com

Bob collected computer paper empty boxes. As the General Accounting Supervisor I had first access. One late working night Bob left his office for dinner. While he was gone I jammed empty boxes into the door frame to his office entry way. He had to remove 10 +_ boxes to get in.

I was just looking to see if I could find Bob again, but sadly found his obituary. We exchanged a good many emails in the early 2000s. Bob helped my family tremendously with knowledge of our family history. May he rest in peace and his loved ones know that his life and work continues to have meaning for Alvey descendents.

Bob and I were distant relatives and genealogy collaborators. We never met in person but I considered him a friend. I will miss him.

I am saddened to hear the news about Bob, but at the same time I feel that Bob probably accomplished most of what he set out to do.

Bob, or Bb if you heard him answer the phone, had the the ability to lead and be a friend. His candor as a professional was alarmingly refreshing and constructive.

I am blessed to have known him.

Bob was so generous to share with me as I studied my husband's Ray and connected families back here in Kentucky. He shared much with many people back here. I'm so sorry for you to lose him. A great husband, a great dad and granddad too, and a great friend. Ann Sipes in Meade county, KY

Dear Ann and Family,

Saddened by the news of Bob's passing. He was
a good and decent man, with a kind and gentle
soul. But don't be too sad, for now, surely, he
rests in the arms of God...

I am deeply saddened by the news of Bob Alvey's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I worked with Bob at Southern California Gas Company and I learned a lot from him. I recall that Bob worked with me into the early morning hours to implement a new Tax accounting treatment. I ran into a roadblock but Bob helped me overcome it. Bob was a remarkable man.

May God give you comfort in your time of grief.
