ROBERT ANTHOINE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 30, 2015.
ANTHOINE--Robert

renowned tax and arts law expert and enthusiastic supporter of the arts, died on January 23, 2015 after a brief illness. His beloved wife, Margarita Maria Anthoine, and daughter, Alison Anthoine, were by his side. Born in Portland, Maine on June 5, 1921, he was the only child of Edward and Sara (Pinkham) Anthoine. After graduating from Duke University in 1942, he served for four years as a Lieutenant in the US Navy. He graduated from Columbia Law School in 1949 and returned there to teach in 1952. In 1963, he joined Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam & Roberts as the head of its tax department. He continued to teach as an adjunct at Columbia for another three decades, and as a visiting professor at law schools around the world through his seventies. His interest in literature and the visual and theatre arts was unbounded. He became close friends with many of the artists whose work he collected, and was instrumental in creating and sustaining many arts-related foundations. He served as the Chairman of the Aperture Foundation for more than 20 years. His support of the Royal Shakespeare Company by, among other things, creating the American Friends of the RSC, led to his appointment as an Honorary Governor for Life of the RSC. He was proud to be the founding Chairman of the Lucid Art Foundation, together with painter Gordon Onslow Ford and Fariba Bogzaran, to support artists who explore the concept of arts and consciousness. He is also survived by three other children--Robert Neal, Nelson and Nina Anthoine; six grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Mary Danielle Hamilton-Russo; and two step-grandchildren. Interment will be private. A memorial celebrating his life will be held in March in NYC on a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Aperture, 547 W. 27th St., NYC 10001.

My heart was in New York last Monday night where friends and family gathered to honour Robert Anthoine. I knew Bob in his capacity as a longtime trustee at Aperture Foundation, and through that role he became a mentor and friend. He taught me important lessons about loyalty to causes you believe in, and told me that a good approach to life was "never pass up the opportunity to meet someone you admire." Thanks to him I had the courage to call up Mary Ellen Mark, Robert Adams, Sylvia Plachy, Eugene Richards, Larry Fink, and many other inspirational photographers. Bob taught at University of Puget Sound, in their law school, and had an affinity for the Northwest. He supported me in many facets of life at Aperture and beyond. He lived a courageous, rich, elegant life, and his resiliency and energy will never be forgotten. I am so glad to have also known Rita who brought sparkle, music, and joy these past years.

In Memory of Robert Anthoine: He met the accomplished artist Morris Graves at his forested home in Northwest California in 1999 to discuss the formation of a non-profit organization to be titled the "Morris Graves Foundation"; a retreat center to enhance the arts and artists. Robert's positive and knowledgeable abilities soon won over Morris Graves and by the year 2000, Robert had successfully established the Foundation. He served as Vice President and Treasurer from 2000-2013 when he resigned due to retirement.

We at the Foundation will always be very grateful for the selfless and free help that Robert Anthoine gave to the arts for a long time to come. His generosity, knowledge of law and wisdom will be missed.

We wish that his wife Rita continues on with her loving and supportive personality and may wisdom prevail.

I have many memories of Bob, but two of my most vivid were attending a Dario Fo performance and seeing Bobby Short at the Hotel Carlyle with him. At both, he was irrepressibly enthusiastic, which may well describe how he lived his life.

I will remember him as a loving and devoted husband to my dear friend Rebecca and as a great lover of life. I know he will be deeply missed by Rita and his family. Our thoughts are with you as you live your lives without his delightful presence.

We are so sorry for those close to him, especially Rita, who now have to live without Bob's unique combination of deep erudition, gentle charm and easy grace. While we lived continents apart, we had many opportunities to meet in Dublin and London. Not for one moment did we not find his presence inspiring and delightful, and his advice and help in legal issues succinct and insightful. He is simply irreplaceable. His long life was a gift to all of us.

I had the great honor to know "The Professor", as I liked to call him, due to my friendship with his son Robert, his first wife Edith, and their other children.
Shortly after the untimely death of his 2nd wife, Bob and I took on the task of refurbishing his W 81st St apt. The Professor was frequently out of town, so he suggested that I stay at his home while we painted, stripped the wooden floors, etc. Such a generous offer from such an intelligent, and kindly man. When in town, we went for breakfast several times just around the corner at his favorite eatery. I relished our conversations.
My sincere condolences to his entire family

My heartfelt condolences to Rita, the most amazing and inspiring soul mate.

My late husband, Edmund Kaufman, was at Columbia Law in the late 50's, and Bob was one of his younger professors. (Ed did an army stint prior to college, and therefore was three years older than his classmates, and just nine years younger than Bob.) Ed and Bob became fast friends, and maintained their connection, personally and professionally, for five decades.

I first met Bob about 35 years ago, and always relished the infrequent but lively and amusing get-togethers, on both coasts. It wasn't difficult to see why my husband cherished his friend, a very dear man of rare accomplishments and many talents. Bob meant the world to him.
