Robert Avera Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 4, 2017.
Robert Lee Avera Sr. (Bob Avera) passed away at around 1:00 AM on Saturday December 2, 2017. At the time of his death Bob was a resident of the Wesleyan at Scenic in Georgetown, Texas.

Bob was born to William Avera and Pearlie Fuller Avera on December 14, 1927 in Quitman, Mississippi. He was a child of the depression and grew up on a farm with his older brother and two sisters. In early 1945 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of seventeen. He went on active duty upon his graduation from Quitman High School and was sent to San Diego where he trained with the Marines for the expected invasion of Japan. Events in August of 1945 eliminated the need for the invasion and Bob was reassigned to Jacksonville, Florida where he completed his service and received an honorable discharge in November 1947. Bob returned to Mississippi and enrolled in the University of Southern Mississippi where he earned a BS in Business. He also met the love of his life and married Peggy Jean Goree on July 23, 1950. After graduation from Southern Bob entered the energy industry and eventually went to work for Humble Oil and Refining Company. At Humble he continued his education with a focus on Law. During his career with Humble and Exxon Bob lived and worked in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi and travelled extensively. One of the accomplishments that he was proudest of was completing the trademark work that resulted in the consolidation of Humble, Standard Oil of New Jersey, Esso, and many other affiliates into Exxon Corporation in 1972. Bob retired from Exxon in 1986 after completing a thirty-five year career. In 2000 Bob and Peggy relocated from Houston to Sun City, Georgetown where Bob was active in the Kiwanis Club and the Men's golf association.

Bob is predeceased by his brother James William Avera and sisters Neva Jean Davis and Beatrice Cameron. He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Peggy Avera of Georgetown, Texas; a son, Robert Lee Avera, Jr. and his wife Rosa of Georgetown, Texas; a daughter, Jean Nibert and her husband Tim of Huntsville, Alabama; seven grandchildren, Christopher Hood, Matthew Hood, Brooke Busby, Karina Springstun, Eric Springstun, Robert Lee Avera III, and Andreina Avera; and five great grandchildren.

A sincere thanks is to be given to the staffs of the Wesleyan and Home Instead Senior Care for the loving care that they provided for Bob.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at the Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas with a Reception to follow in the Southwestern Room. Interment will follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Georgetown.

Have great memories of Uncle Robert, but we have to remember that life is short and someday we will be with him again if it is God's will. Sorry for your loss, but he is at peace now. Our prayers and thoughts are with you at this time.
