"Eli, Ullancah Xupalli"

September 26, 1950 - October 3, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Eli Castillo Jr., affectionately known as Eli and Ullancah Xupalli. Born in La Mesa, Texas, Eli grew up in Oxnard, California, and later raised his family in San Jose, California, where he passed away.

Eli is survived by his daughters: Christina Castillo Mirra, Lisa Castillo Zankich (Kris Zankich), and Andrea Castillo Schlechty (Ben Schlechty); his cherished grandchildren: Jeremy Zankich, Nikolai Mirra, Luka Mirra, Piper Mirra, and Ronan Schlechty; and his siblings: Alma Castillo, Mary Blessing, Virginia Trujillo, Anabel Trujillo, and Samuel Trujillo. He also leaves behind his beloved goddaughters, Marina Garduno and Susana Garcia, along with dozens of nieces and nephews, all of whom adored him. Eli was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Castillo Sr. and Jesusa Barrientes Castillo; his grandmother, "Lita" Maria del Refugio Rodriguez; and his brothers, Jose, Alberto, Reynaldo, and Joel Castillo.

Eli was a proud graduate of Oxnard High School-a Yellowjacket to the core-and continued his studies at Ventura Junior College and California State University, Northridge, where he focused on psychology, behavioral sciences, and liberal arts. He was a passionate advocate and activist within 'El Movimiento,' the Chicano rights movement, where his dedication was sparked by his involvement in the Chicano student organization MEChA. He dedicated 40 years of his life to serving the community as a case manager and social worker for the County of Santa Clara, working in the Department of Aging and Adult Services, before retiring in 2014. Eli was also a committed member of SEIU Local 521, where he served on the Latino Caucus.

A passionate advocate for social justice, Eli was deeply committed to civil rights and equality. His life's work was driven by his belief in creating a more just and equitable society for Chicanos. Whether through his professional work or personal activism, Eli tirelessly fought for the rights of others. One of his proudest achievements was his ancestral journey. Beyond his work in social services, Eli took immense pride in reconnecting with his Indigenous roots. His participation in the years-long Sundance ritual with the Lakota people in South Dakota was transformative, and he spoke of it with deep pride, respect, and joy.

Eli will be remembered for his sharp intellect, his humor, and his unwavering loyalty to his friends. He delighted in giving everyone their own special nickname and never missed an opportunity to share a smile or a joke. Above all, Eli was a hard-working, passionate individual who lived true to his values. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and advocacy.

Eli was a man of profound values who stood by his principles with unwavering conviction. His spirit of advocacy, love for his heritage, and dedication to his community will live on through the many lives he touched.

We will gather to celebrate the life of Eli Castillo. Services will be held at the Memorial Park banquet facilities on Sunday, November 17, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., located at 21251 Stevens Creek Blvd, Cupertino, CA 95014.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his name to one of the organizations listed below, supporting causes important to his grandchildren, his calpulli, or his lifelong commitment to civil rights and social justice.

I must say this to Christina and Lisa as I remember so vividly how your dad would say "perrito, perrito the wolf the wolf". It was always so funny! You probably don't remember me, but I will never forget you. May creator bless you all abundantly. With much love. Rosie Aguilar-Moreno

I remember Eli as a young person. He was friends with my oldest brother Rudy Aguilar of Oxnard. When I left Oxnard to go to school(San Jose), I reached out to Eli and Esther, they opened their home to me. Eli was great to talk to and always so witty and funny. Ad some years passed and I had already moved back to Oxnard, I returned to visit,my husband Efrain and our 3mo old son Jesús. The last time I saw Eli was at Bernard Larios' funeral. God bless you eternally brother Eli may you Rest in peace and in Power!

I can hardly believe it. I just talked to him on messenger a month ago. He seem to be doing well, but he said both his bikes were broken down and he wasn´t in a hurry to fix them RIP Eli you will be missed.

The first time I met Eli was in the Boy Scouts. He was in my face because a watermelon got broken. But we became best friends. Great time in band. I remember his red corvette and Honda 160. The start of his love for motorcycles. We'd surfed at Silver Strand Beach and body surfed at the Wedge. He'd take 1st place in freestyle and butterfly swimming. He was so witty and quick. He always had a comeback and a joke. He really cared about people. Love you and miss you.

Eli was one of my best friends growing up. Weekend football, played in the high school band, my little sisters grew up knowing him because we were always hanging out. Eli, Cruz Garcia, and myself were together everywhere. I will miss my little brother. Rest in peace. You left me with a library of memories. I love you!

Eli took me on my very first, and last ride on his motorcycle when we were about 16 or 17 years old. He was my brother's best friend and hung around our house alot. Always a gentleman.
